Question about Microwave Ovens

1 Answer

Hi! Our 10-year-old KitchenAid fridge (Model #KBRS22KGBL02, freezer on bottom) became loud a few months ago. We were planning to either repair or replace it, but the fridge section quit working a few days ago. The freezer section is still fine, but the whole appliance is still loud. Question: Is it worth it to attempt a fix, or better to abandon it and replace it? If it's a fix, any suggestions regarding fixes and potential cost? We were shopping today and looking at LG fridges. If you suggest a replacement for our KitchenAid, are LGs good quality for a replacement? Thanks!

Welcome to FixYa!
Replace it.
Facts:

  • A loud noise and a cooling problem means that the compressor is worn out. Repair cost is around $550.
  • Lifespan of a refrigerator is only 12 years. $500 for 2 more years is not a sound decision. Expect more problems as your fridge reaches its end of life.
  • Todays refrigerators are 3 times more energy efficient than 10 years ago which will save you significant money in your electric bills.
  • Todays refrigerators are built for more space and easy cleaning which will make your everyday life more easier and less stressful.
LG is a good brand but I would not say that it is the best right now. In my opinion, I would go for a brand that had made a mark in refrigerators. If I'm not mistaken, LG is a new player in refrigeration and air conditioning. I'm not quite sure what brand had made a mark in your area but you might find the link below helpful before deciding on what brand to choose.
http://www.refrigerator-reviews-ratings.com , this site is really very helpful and useful for making decisions such as yours.
Again, replace it :-)
Thank you for using FixYa. Have a great day. Jas247

I have a ten year old Amana bottom freezer refrigerator bx21v1c,and the compressor has died. I am debating as to whether to buy a new refrigerator or to pay up to $800 to replace the compressor.

Hi,
There is no way that I would spend $800.00 on a ten year old fridge... I can do my own and I would not replace a compressor on a ten year old unit...too many problems afterward...too many other things that could go wrong shortly...

You will be better off to take the $800.00 and put it towards a new unit...

Hi, I have a amana fridge with freezer on the bottom. It has an ice maker and water dispenser. The big problem is a buzzing noise comming from the fridge, it start aprox every 16 min and buzzes for 10...

The buzzing you hear is the water valve trying to run water to the icemaker. If there is no water going to the icemaker it will be going into cycles one after another. And when it does it adds heat into the freezer. Turn the ice maker off and see if the freezer gets colder.

I have a Whirlpool Gold top-mount fridge (GR2SH/GR2SHM). It's about 6 years old. About a year ago the freezer started to have ice build up and water would over flow into the fridge. I defrost the...

The defrost cycle is not working. After a predetermined number of hours of compressor running time, a timer actuates the defrost cycle, which stops the compressor and turns on a heating element to melt the ice. Either the timer or heating element is not working. Also, make sure the melted ice water is actually draining and not re-freezing.

My microwave became very loud and will not heat. it is 5 years old and happened suddenly.

If it is a loud buzzing noise it is either the diode or magnetron. Working with the high voltage of a Microwave oven I would never recommend anyone other than a trained professional to attempt this repair.

No heat in my microwave.

There can be a couple of problems that cause the fan to get louder. 1 is that the Diode assy has failed that controls the power circuit of your magnetron (RF) The 2nd is the magnetorn itself may have failed. (If this part has failed it is cheaper to just replace the unit in most cases) These are the 2 most common failures. In a 10 year old unit replacing the diode is a minor expense and worth the repair cost. The diode can be resistance checked with the power off and one terminal disconnected. The Ohm meter set on resistance should only read in one direction. If it is either open or shorted in both directions then the diode has failed. Without a model number is it difficult to state exactly where the diode assy is in your unit. Most of the time they are located either on the bottom INSIDE of the chassis or on the chassis inside the back panel.
