Question about Cameras

1 Answer

Hi, I just bought a used Canon Rebel xs on ebay and got it in the mail today. The pictures are nice and clear, but looking through the viewfinder I see about 4 small black squiggly lines. Should I be concerned, and try to return the camera? Thank you.

Do the lines show up on the pictures either when viewed on your computer or when you print the pics? If not, then maybe you shouldn't be too concerned if you got the camera at a good price. If the lines do show up, then it could be a sensor problem. Could be as simple as a sensor cleaning or more serious.

Thank you for writing back. The pictures are clear when I view them on computer. However, the black squiggly lines bother me, as I think there is something wrong with it. I have 5 days to return it, and was told there was absolutely nothing wrong with the camera. I bought it for $335. I think I bought it from a camera dealer who said the previous owner used the self cleaning sensor all the time (whatever that means). Do you think this is nothing to be concerned about? Thank you.

make sure the lens is not in manual mode. on the side there is MF and AF make sure its in AF for auto focus. id its still looking nblurr in the viewfinder when pressing the shutter half way then user the smal wheel next to the viewfinder so the viewfinder is calibrated for your eye.

When I take a picture, the camera focuses just fine. But when I'm looking in the viewfinder it looks fuzzy, even if it comes out clear. What's wrong and how do I fix it?

There's a diopter adjustment knob just above and right of the viewfinder. Turn it while looking through the viewfinder until it comes into focus.

My Canon EOS Rebel xs takes a focused photograph, but when you look through the viewfinder it is blurry. Even the light meter is blurry. Why would that occur?

Can you change the diopter setting on the viewfinder to accommodate your vision? It's usually a dial or slide switch at the eyepiece.

I can help you fix the BUSY Error or Error 99 of your Canon EOS Rebel XS.

Installation of this Canon EOS Rebel XS firmware version 1.06 update will solve these problems:
  1. Some cameras may exhibit a phenomenon in which the LCD monitor does not display, the shutter does not release, and the BUSY indication remains lit in the viewfinder.
  2. The message, "Err 99 Shooting is not possible. Turn the power switch to<OFF> and <ON> again or re-install the battery", appears on the camera's LCD monitor, and after the above operation is carried out,the LCD monitor displays in a language that is different from the actual language setting.
See the firmware instructions and download the firmware upgrade by following these Fixya Tips :

  1. Follow this link to download a pdf version of the firmware installation instruction guide.

Unless you have the Digital Rebel XS or XSi, you are not going to be able to preview the shot on the LCD. This feature was not available on any digital SLR made before 2007. Compact cameras have always had this feature because they have a different optical architecture than SLRs. If you have the XS or XSi, check in the index of the user manual under "Live View shooting" for specific directions.
