SOURCE: Trying to update firmware on

I had the same problem and immediately suspected that, as I had downloaded and expanded the .zip file on a Mac, I was suffering from the industry's usual bovine shortsightedness and that I needed to do it on a PC. I did and it worked. So I think the important part is to un-archive the .zip file on a PC, and find the file inside the resulting folder called
BDP12X_149.MVP
Make sure you have just that file on your USB stick, and no folders, and then the player should recognise it. You'll note that Pioneer's instructions don't mention this file name at all. Useless. Wish I'd bought another brand.

SOURCE: Trying to update firmware on

The reason it does this is because you are using a Mac's default un-zipping tool. Download Stuffit Expander and it will work no problem. - www.stuffit.com - It took me weeks to work this out. P O S.

Testimonial: "Good answer. Another solution (as i found out) was to download and unzip on a PC. Very backward of Pioneer to be un-Mac-friendly."

SOURCE: Several blu ray discs will no longer play in

This is the troubleshooting procedure for the Sony, I had one that did the same thing, and this resolved my issue. Hope it will resolve your's as well.

Follow the steps below to troubleshoot if the BD player cannot read or play a disc:
IMPORTANT: Prior to following the steps below, go to the Drivers & Software section of the Sony® eSupport Web site to check for available firmware updates. If a firmware update is available, it will be posted there with a list of improvements over the original or any previous firmware version. Some disc playback issues may be resolved by ensuring the BD player has the most current firmware installed.

  1. Ensure the Easy Setup procedure has been completed on the BD player. NOTE: Can't play DISC may display on the LCD screen if the Easy Setup procedure was not completed first.
  2. Ensure the inserted disc is compatible with the BD player. NOTE: Consult the instruction manual of the BD player for a list of compatible discs.Manuals are available online through the Manuals/Specs/Warranty link on this page.
  3. Select BD players may require that a USB memory device has been properly inserted into the EXT slot of the player prior to playing the movie. If the BD player being used does not have an EXT input, skip this step. NOTE: The USB memory device may need to be re-formatted to FAT32 format prior to inserting it into the player.
  4. Use a soft cloth to clean the disc.
  5. Examine the disc for any cracks or scratches that might be interfering with playback.
  6. Wipe the top of the disc tray using a soft dry cloth before placing the disc on the tray. Attempt to play the disc again.
  7. Attempt to play another disc. NOTE: If another disc plays in the player, then the previous disc may be faulty. In this case, contact the Customer Information Service Center at 800-222-7669 to speak with a customer service representative for further troubleshooting.
  8. Remove the disc from the BD player.
  9. Turn off the BD player.
  10. Unplug the power cord of the BD player from the electrical outlet.
  11. Let the player remain without power for 1 minute.
  12. Plug the power cord back into the electrical outlet.
  13. Turn on the BD player.
  14. Insert the disc into the BD player.
  15. Attempt to play the disc.
The troubleshooting steps listed above should resolve your issue. If you have completed all of the steps and the issue is not resolved, service may be required.

We are having problems with our BRD player BDP s300 playing BRD. It will play regular DVD just fine.

In most cases, the issue might be with the Java contents on the new Blu-ray discs is making this issues. The Blu-ray technology is developing everyday and adding more and more features to the existing technology. Hence it is required to make the Blu-ray Player up-to-date by installing the latest firmware update available from the manufacturer (who ever it is). Going ahead with the first step, please install the latest firmware update available for the Blu-ray Player.
Please click the following link to get the latest firmware update available for your Blu-ray Player:
http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu-download.pl?upd_id=6170&mdl=BDPS300
You can review the "Important Notes" and "Firmware Update Instructions" on the page to get the instructions to install the firmware update.
If the issue persists after installing the firmware update, the would have been with the disc. Check the disc with another player, try different discs with same player.
If the Blu-ray Player is not at all playing any Blu-ray disc, then it may require service.

I have tried to update the firmware to 5.50 for my Sony BDP-S300. However, the player still says "cannot play disc". So if it cannot play the disc how can it update.... do I need to get a...

I suggest that you install the latest firmware update to resolve the issue. Please click here to download the latest firmware update. It is recommended to use CD -R disc to create the firmware update disc. I hope you're clear with downloading the update from support page. Once you download and save the file in the folder in the computer, you can double click the file to extract. You will be prompted to save the UPDATE_BDPS300_VER0550.ISO file in a folder. Most of the customers will be making mistake here after... We need to use a burning software which is capable to burning discs from ISO images. ISO image is nothing but a RAW format of burned image. I will give you the instructions to burn using Nero.. Steps will be almost same in all ISO capable software. Open installed nero software from computer. You may locate it under Start Menu programs. Go to File Menu (Some times you will get a wizard where you can select the Image Burning option or burn ISO option) Navigate the extracted .ISO file we saved in the computer. follow the onscreen instructions. Insert the disc when ever Nero asked to insert

If the player does not play any discs, you can use a head cleaner disc which is available in most of the electronics shop to clean the head before trying the firmware update disc.
Hope this helps. If you need any assistance. Please get back to me. I will be more than happy to assist you. Thanks for understanding.

I have just had this issue, apparently the firmware needs to be updated. I am at 1.38 but there is a newer version (1.65) available. Look at the following link:

http://www.pioneer.co.uk/uk/support/software/BDP-51FD/index.html#download_18

and look at 'Download the update instructions'. This will tell you how to check your current Firmware Version and how to update it if it is required.

Most likely you need to 'flash' (update) your BDP-S300's firmware. I had the same issue while trying to play AVTR in my BDP-S300. I downloaded Sony's latest firmware update, burned it to disc and popped the disc into the player... It takes 5-10 minutes for the 'flashing' to take place. AVTR now works in my player... Had to do this with one other Blu-ray movie about 18 months ago also.

Download the latest firmware version for the BDP-S300 here...

Follow the instructions to the letter!

Pioneer DBP-51FD Blu-Ray

I bought mine four days ago and it would not pay the new James Bond Blue-Ray. The screen said your player needs an update. I downloaded the firmware, and it still did not work. I took the disc down to Best Buy and it played fine on an identical DBP 51-FD. Their tech came out with a replacement player and it played fine. Now, however, it will not play the DVD Happily Ever After 2, eve after the firmware update. Strangely enough, the other player played that DVD fine.

In other words, take it back and get another one.
