The video card is plugged into the PCI slot on the mother board. Its the one into which the VGA/DVI cable from your monitor plugs in. It also has a small fan on it. Note that some systems use on-board graphics which means that the motherboard has the GPU as well . In such cases there will be no seperate graphics card

Bad setting. If you press and hold the power button, the computer will shut off. That will keep you from having to unplug it.

Check if you VGA is properly settled in the PCI slot. Try to take it out, clean the slot for dust.
If that doesn't help, it is well possible that you VGA is not working any more.

My Vaio doesn't go to sleep/hibernate when closing the lid

Maybe the little sensor or pin that sticks up and is pushed in when you close the lid is broken and the software doesn't realize the lid has been closed.

Check the cord and connections for the monitor; this has one wire that must have voltage on it or the monitor goes to sleep, and a broken wire or loose connection will fool it into thinking you are powering down. If this doesn't work try going into power options and setting monitor to never power down.

If it was your video card, you would have no picture at all. Try to boot in safe mode and do into your options and make sure your hibernation is not on. Only other thing I can think of, it could be *********** board.
