This is almost always due to a bad speaker connection in the speaker output terminals on the back of the receiver unit, or the speaker input terminals on the back of the speakers. Check your wire connections at these points and fix as necessary. If the plastic wire insulation is pushed inside the terminals, it will prevent the wire from making contact in the terminal.

No sound after a storm how can I troubleshoot the problem?

Hello, first try suing a dvd to see if you have sound. then make sure all of the audio settings are correct for using internal speakers, if they are, try hooking up an amp it the audio outputs and see if you get sound. If you get sound it may have damaged the audio output ic or related components and using an external amp is the most economical route to go....tks

When on 5.1 dvd ther is no sound from rear speakers, but i can run the test tone ok

check to see that the dvd player sound setting is set to BITSTREAM and not pcm. pcm is only 2 channel. Then check to see that the volume setting for the rear speakers in dvd is up, most sony receivers hold different settings for different applications, (vid 1, sat/tv, dvd) and remember when you switch between them. Rear surround should be up all the way , I believe for your receiver that is +10 also make sure you enable the rear speakers in the setup menu for surround sound.

DVD plays partial sound

Check your speaker connections it sounds like you have a 5.1 or higher sound system. 5.1 means left front speaker, right front speaker, center speaker, right rear speaker, left rear speaker and subwoofer.

Voices in movies all get channeled to the center speaker (you can usually hear it a bit from the right and left front speakers as well). If your center speaker is disconnected or not working, you will only hear the background sounds.

Won't work

Check the A / V input output switch (pictorial #28)) in the rear, it needs to be in the output position. When set to input this disables the splash screen and OSD menu. Musktek manual does not mention this. HTH Linuxdude
