Question about Ryobi 15" Electric Factory Reconditioned Trimmer (ZRRY41002) - Factory Reconditioned

2 Answers

Model RY30040A I replaced the pull cord and reassembled the unit but now as the engine runs the shaft does not turn... The clutch bell housing seems to spin freely so did I not assemble the clutch correctly? I tightened the clutch plates but did not torque them too hard. Any Idea's? Thanks, Mike

The shaft is not broken in the tube. It has something to do with with the clutch or clutch bell housing as far as I can tell. I can insert the bell housing into the tube and activate the tube (to spine) by hand.

Got it! The clutch wasn't adjusted properly... so I dug back into it, corrected the problem and am now ready to get those weeds!

    Thanks!

The flex cable has squares pressed into each end which you no doubt noticed. These squares must engage the drive on the motor side and on the cutting head side. It is possible to assemble the unit with the flex cable lying to one side and not engaging the drives, top or bottom. Strip the shaft and tube assembly again and check the drive ends, also check that the flex drive has not sheared.

It sounds like you are talking about the centrifugal clutch. There are two flyweights that are motor driven and centrifugal force throws them out as the motor speeds up to a bit above idle. The weights are spring loaded to the retracted position. The flex cable is driven by the drum when the flyweights drive it. The flyweights have a friction lining on their outer surfaces which drive on the inner side of the drum.

  • Hole in the end of the clutch housing where the cable slides in has a # 20 torx screw in there.
  • Pull the spark plug, stuff some rewind starter rope in the plug hole, use a water pump pliers and turn off the clutch plate(s). NOTE: curved shaft trimmer will be a standard right-hand thread, straight shaft will be a left-hand thread.

remove the head from the shaft( tube) and remove the broken drive cable
get and fit new cable and then reattach the head to the shaft ( tube )
the gears in the head are fairly robust but the drive is a cable which twists up and pulls out of the drive squares at either end

The pull cord on my Ryobi 30cc trimmer broke. Is this true, that there is no way to access case to replace the pull cord? This has been my difficulty! There seems to be no way to reach clutch springs,...

If you have the same kind of clutch as my cs30 week wacker, then there is a screw at the end of the shaft that the clutch sits on. The screw is down inside and requires a star shaped screw driver to turn. When I tried to turn it, the engine kept turning. I had to open the back part of the engine in order to put a screw driver in it to stop it from turning.
