Question about McCulloch Garden

I am fitting a new primer pump to a McCullock model 3505-av 16 and there are 2 outlets to connect the tube are there 2 tubes and where do they go i can only find 1 connecting tube on the carby. Regards Paul

You should have 3 tubes, a fuel delivery tube, a fuel return tube and a fuel suction tube, the fuel delivery tube ( the one with the fuel filer on in the tank ) goes to the connection on the carb nearest to the pump cover held with a single screw, the other connection on the carb goes to the suction side of the primer bulb ( the shorter of the two connections ) the return to tank tube fits to the longer connection on the primer, this tube is just pushed into the top of the fuel tank,

This is a common problem. The fuel lines can become brittle and fracture, or sometimes they swell and will not stay on their connections.

The tube that connects between the carburetor and motor is likely used to pulse the fuel pump that is internal to the carburetor.

The primer pulls the fuel through the carburetor drawing the air out. As the primer is stroked first air than fuel is pumped out of the carburetor. The output of the primer returns to the fuel tank. That fuel line appears to have failed or become disconnected in your craftsman. Either the hose has broken at or near the fuel tank, or has pulled out of the tank. There is a small hole in the tank for many machines. The hole is smaller(providing a seal) than the tube diameter requiring a minor force to squeeze the tube back in place.

Look for the fuel feed tube that also connects from the fuel tank to the carberator. Any loose connections will allow air into the carberator and it will not beable to run.

Important is that the fuel feed tube can not be switched with the return tube from the primer. Connected inside the tank is a fuel filter that protects the carberator from contamination.

Cratsman 40cc chainsaw will not run. i get it started and pull the throttle open and it wants to die, sounds like it starves for fuel. put new line from tank to carb, blew out carb, dont no settings for...


A quick test to see if it's running too lean (starved for fuel) is to gently push the primer bulb. If the motor spins up (revs), it's likely a clogged high speed jet. If it stalls immediately, then it's running too rich and you need to cut back on the high jet.

As for the primer tube, if the bulb pulls fuel and fills up when pumped 3-8 times, then things are fine. If the bulb never gets fuel, then you may have identified a potential cause (missing tube).

I am replacing the fuel tank assy and purge bulb (i.e. primer) on my Sears Craftsman model 358.798940. The original plastic tubing was old and brittle and broke apart while disassembling, so I could not...


The order of fuel travel should be:
Fuel filter to fuel hose to Carb's Fuel Supply nipple. (On the main body of the carb)
Primer Plate Nipple on carb to fuel hose to Suction Nipple on Primer Bulb. (It must pull fuel thru the carb, not push)
Pressure Nipple on Primer Bulb to fuel hose to Fuel Tank Return hose.

When correctly installed, the fuel will be PRESSED into the fuel tank via the return hose when primer is pressed in . . . and SUCTIONED out of the tank and into the Carburetor when primer in released.

I had to replace the primer bulb and fuel tubing. The primer bulb just disappeared, presumably blew off. I have installed the new bulb and replaced the fuel tubing, but I need to know where the tubes...


The line with the fuel filter in the end comes out of the tank and it goes to the bottom fitting on the carburator. The other line comes out of the tank and goes to the bottom fitting on the primer bulb, and the third section goes from the top fitting on primer bulb to top fitting on carburator. primer bulb... long barb goes to fuel tank pick-up.... short goes to carb.... make sure the new tubing is safe for the damn ethanol fuel and that it fits snug thru the tank or it will leak

the large hose from the tank goes to the suction side of the primer bulb. The large line from the out put side of the bulb goes to the bottom inlet of the carb.
the small line goes from the top outlet tube on the carb back into the tank near the primer bulb.

IVe worked out that the tube from the filtered tube ( the lowest part of the tank) goes to the bottom entryof the carb and the other goes to the primer bulb. the other side of the primer bulb goes to the top entry of the carb.So the barb has two entry points,the top being to prime for start and the bottom for ordinary running.I found this works for me.

if its diesel, attach a tube to pipe leading into primer pump.[black bulb ]. attach a pump . and tube from outlet of pump to container pump out diesel till empty. if petrol locate pipe feed from tank and connect to it same as earlier
