For the BIOS update, you should go to the computer manufacturers website and click on the support link. I included a link to your models BIOS download page below..
http://support.gateway.com/us/en/product/default.aspx?tab=1&modelId=2298
download update and run.
For the memory, here's a link to the type for your model..

to install - pop the cover off the case - look for the memory stick slots - push the two clips away to pop the memory sticks up - then replace with the new sticks and push down with your thumbs until they click in. included an image of a motherboard to help you locate memory slots.need step by step instruction on how to install - dynamic.jpghope it helps.

Update windows xp to Windows 10 explain steps.....XP TO WHERE TO END AT WINDOWS 10 INSTALLATION

You almost certainly can't. Windows XP is no longer supported and hasn't been for years. There is a compatibility checker on the Microsoft site that will see if your hardware and the software you have on the computer will run Windows 10. I had XP and had a high end PC built and purchased Windows 7 Pro. I then took the free upgrade to Windows 10.

I need to reinstall win 7 and wipe my system

Put Windows 7 disc in the drive and boot from it. Windows 7 install will start. Follow the steps, it's easy and you have done it before.
You may have to change boot order from BIOS to get it boot from dvd.

Have you ever booted in win7? It may be a win 7 issue not a memory issue. Does it boot with the 2 512 MBs of memory. unplug, remove battery, install the 512 MBs memory, reboot.

Hi, im trying to install windows 7 ultimate onto my gateway. I bought it retail from best buy and am having problem with the install... is it factory set for me not to be able to install an operating...

If you bought a full retail version and not an upgrade, you may need to do a fresh installation of windows. You also need to make certain that your gateway model is able to upgrade to windows 7. Checking your computer's support page, there are no BIOS updates available. Your computer should be fully capable of upgrading to windows 7 from windows Vista. ALso looking at Gateway's support page for this model, there are no drivers offered for Windows 7. All drivers offered are for windows Vista. I have seen computers in the past that will not tolerate an operating system change from the system that was installed at the factory.

If you have a restore partition, you can back up your data, and do a clean install of windows after formatting your hard drive. You may also want to make recovery disks for your computer in case the Win 7 will take on your computer or you cannot get your hardware to work with Win 7 since Gateway offers no Win 7 drivers.
Good luck. Take precautions to back up data and be able to revert to your original factory settings if necessary.

I am using toshiba l310 laptop with windows xp installed onit.NOW I WANT TO CHANGE MY OPERATING SYSTEM FROM XP TO WINDOWS 7,MY QUESTION IS THAT CAN I USE SAME DRIVERS FOR WINDOWS 7 WHICH I USE ON XP ...

You will need new drivers for Win 7. Before attempting to go to Win 7, run the Microsoft Upgrade Advisor and see what issues it lists: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=161223 (since laptops have on-board video that may be an issue). You will be doing a custom install from XP and have to reinstall all of your programs and drivers - many will be available. Several XP programs will not install in Win7 without some work (compatability mode or the XP mode virtual machine (in Pro or Ultimate). Upgrading your software may be needed unless you have the latest version that supports XP through Win7 or want to do the work-arounds.

In addition you would be wise to check for any BIOS updates for your specific machine and apply those. Windows 7 is a good OS if you have 2 GB or more of memory. It can run with less but it isn't better than XP in that case. The biggest difference is that Win7 will be supported by Microsoft for updates for a longer period (patches); XP will lose that support in the next few years.

I hope this helps.
Cindy Wells
(I converted an XP desktop to Win7. However, my video card could handle the OS and I have 2.5 GB of memory and a Windows Experience Index of 3.9 from the system.)

If your board is not supporting the 2gb memory module, it won't make any difference by upgrading the BIOS.
