Hi,
Having a hard time figuring out what your problem is.... the w is turning on the furnace and you think that the heat pump should be running also??? When the heat pump is running the furnace should not be running also... just the blower should be running...

Also to get a wiring diagram you also need to give the heat pump make and model....even then heat pump to furnace wiring can be very tricky...

Please comment back and try to clarify what is or is not happening...

needs a tune up. flame is probably yellow which means it is burning too much fuel and therefore not getting as hot and it would smell different also.

My gas furnace and heat pump runs at the same time???

its likely the outside control unit board its supposed to only kick on gas only when the temp is at freezing..
or
the inside thermostat is not selected for heat pump, open it an look at the jumper / switch.
or just replace the thermostat , then return it saying you couldnt figure it out. :P
there are a lot more variables here after that you cant know how to check.

Whats' so hard is the Honeywell thermostat has a built in 1@ differential. It is not adjustable.
You might ask your installer about a time delay relay installed in the furnace to break the thermostat heat wire (usually white wire).
Most time delay relays are 90 seconds. But that might be enough to reduce the furnace cycling.

I have a Rheem Gas/Electric AC unit that provides both Air and Heat. Yesterday the heat stopped working... it blows out cold air. We've had some cold temperatures lately (low 20's) but this isn't unusual...

Heat pumps provide good heat until the tempurature drops below 35-40 degrees. After that there isn't much heat to extract from the outside air and then either the gas furnace kicks in or the electric heat strip does the job of heating the air. if you have heat strips, I would check your breakers in your panel and sometimes there are a couple of breakers right on the air handler or furnace. The ones that will be for your heat strip are 220v and will be twice as wide as your normal 110v breakers . Please don't trust a visual inspection as they can look like they are in the "on" position but are indeed tripped. Turn them all they way off and then back on. If the beakers check out you may have an open cicuit in the heat strips themselves and you will need to have a qualified HVAC tech look at your furnace to repair it.

If your furnace is a "duel fuel" and uses natural or LP gas for back up heat then your ten year old rheem probably needs a good maintenance by a qualified service tech. There is a flame sensor to clean, ignitor to check (replaces the old school pilots), burners to clean flue connections to check and much more. ALL manufacturers of any heating apliance recommend yearly maintenance. Most companies offer something for around 100 bucks. I hope this helps.

It's cold out, and my Central Air kicks on every time my furnace kicks in. I get heat, but don't think my outside unit (fan) should be kicking in each time my furnace kicks on. Suggestions

Hi, If you have what is called a heat pump, the outdoor unit is supposed to run. It has a reversing valve which reverses the flow of refrigerant and the indoor unit becomes the condenser and the outdoor becomes the evaporator coil. Now, if you don't have a heat pump and the furnace is gas fired, then the control wiring or thermostat is calling for both to come on. Control wiring has to be touching together somewhere and bringing on both. Look over the exposed stat wire outside if you have a dog that may have chewed the wires, I have seen this happen. If all wiring looks good, then the stat is faulty and must be replaced. Make sure you don't have a heat pump first, as the fan, compressor, and all will run on heat and cooling. I hope this will solve you're problem, please let me know, I would like to hear back. Sincerely,

Electric furnace blows cold air before and after warm air.

It is normal. Your house has to go down a couple more degrees because the heat pump is not working. You can solve this by rewirng you thermostat. Take off the wire that goes to Y and tape off. Then take the wires that are marked w and e or w1 and put the wires to yellow. Do not run ac with it wired like this. If you need more information please post me back

Heat Pump/Furnace Trip Circuit Breaker

My system will run for a short period and then suddenly trips the circuit breaker in the main panel for the heat pump.

I have a Goodman - 3 ton system about 8 - 9 yrs old. I'm being told that I need to replace the heat pump/air conditioner compressor?

What do you think?

Ruud heat pump high pressure cut off problem

That's going to be in your installer configuration. Check and make sure the G terminal has a wire connected to it at the tstat , and that connection it tight. In the configuration menu, make sure it is set for a heat pump, elected heat. It seems to me that the tstat doesn't know its connected to a heat pump. Should be able to locate aodel # for tstat on the back of it. And ask Mr. Google for a manual, if you don't have 1. Hope this helps!
