My Frigidaire microwave trips the breaker every 5th or so use before the microwave begins to cook.

Thank you for your post, Steve Shaw!

From what you have described it sounds like a possible faulty wiring harness, control panel, or magnetron within your Frigidaire microwave. I would recommend having a professional out to provide a proper diagnosis. This will help to avoid unnecessary part purchases. -Matt

Blowing breaker

In general house hold circuit breaker of the house is 15 Amps or 20 Amps.

Either you have defected (weak) circuit breaker and wiring or bad Microwave oven.

The 99.99 % house hold Microwave ovens pull less than 15 Amps. They may have internal ceramic 15A fuse or 15 Amp internal circuit breaker.

To isolate your problem:

1. Plug your Microwave oven to different areas (different electrical circuit) if the different circuit breaker still trips... your Microwave oven has a short - Most of them has a small ceramic fuse 15 amps fuse.-also check some inter lock switches at door .

2. If the Microwave oven works Ok then you may have:

2a. You may overload the existing electrical circuit, try to unplug some other appliances

2b. You may have bad electrical outlet receptacle (Replace it with the same type , - may need helps from licensed electrician)

2c. Weak or defect house hold circuit breaker. (Replace it with the same type , brand - may need helps from licensed electrician)

I was cooking food for 1 minute and it just shut off after approx. 30 sec. There are no lights or power now. The outlet is fine. The unit is 4 yrs old.

Check your other appliance. You may have tripped a break. If they are all functioning, and you have no dead outlets in your kitchen, then the unit will need to be serviced. Hope it's the breaker.
a 1200w microware will draw 10 amps all by itself. Your outlets are most likely on 15 amp breakers, so it wouldn't take much amp draw from another kitchen appliance to trip the breaker.

Just bought a new rca microwave oven RMW1143 it keeps blowing my breaker.. how do i change the power settings or do you have any other solutions

As this appliance is only rated at 700 Watt which means it draws about 1200 Watts. A 15 Amp breaker is fine and if it is blowing a reason must be found. Is it an earth leakage breaker? if it is then is there a possible fault?
I would get the appliance tested for electrical leakage if the size of the breaker is not the problem.

My circut breaker keeps triping. i need to know how many amps it uses so i can get the right breaker

Most domestic microwave ovens draw arount 1kWatt on microwave and the same again for convection.
If it is a European country (230Volts) maximum power will be 10 Amps, 20 Amps on 110Volts.
If the breaker is an RCD type, you have an earth line fault!

15A breaker tripping; Is this the right size breaker for the unit?

The breaker is sized according to the size of the wire used in the circuit. The breakers task is to protect the wire from an over current.
The allowed sizes are
#14 wire .... 15 amp breaker
#12 wire ..... 20 amp breaker
#10 wire .. 30 amp breaker
To check if the oven and circuit are compatable .. run an extension for the oven to an outlet outside the kitchen and see if it holds.

Can a combination microwave/convection/exhaust fan appliance which draws 1500 volts and has a 3 prong grounded plug be hard wired to panel and what size of copper wire to use

I assume that you mean 1500 Watts ?

which is 6.25 amps UK or 13.6 amps US

1.5mm UK 14 Gauge US

The National Electrical Code [NEC] requires their own cable sizing for premises wiring. Refer to the NEC rules to determine building wiring, as this page relates to electronic equipment wiring. For reference, the ampacity of copper wire at 300C for common wire sizes
14 AWG may carry a maximum of 20 Amps in free air, or 15 Amps as part of a 3 conductor cable.
12 AWG may carry a maximum of 25 Amps in free air, or 20 Amps as part of a 3 conductor cable.
10 AWG may carry a maximum of 40 Amps in free air, or 30 Amps as part of a 3 conductor cable.
8 AWG may carry a maximum of 70 Amps in free air, or 50 Amps as part of a 3 conductor cable.

Wiring a microwave

For just the microwave, use a 20 amp breaker at 110V.. Wire the branch corcuit with #12 wire. While you MIGHT get away with lesser rating, it is not worth the gamble. Microwave ovens draw reactive currents so need to be safe.

My RFS12MPS runs for around 5 secs, and then trips

Sounds like you have a intermittant shorting high voltage capacitor. I have had several of these that check good at rest then short after power is applied then un short by the time you put your meter on it to see if it is shorted. Best suggestion it to substitute the capacitor. The only othe rpossibility is you HV transformer is shorting out. You can completly disconnect the leads to the xfrm and run 120v to the primary. if it draws over 15 amps it is shorted. if it is shorted it could draw up to 30 amps. I would try subbing thecapacitor and if that does not cure it, it is most likely the Xfmr.

GE Spacesaver microwave trips the circuit breaker

Since power = voltage X current, 1.58kW / 120VAC = 13.166A

So this unit should be fine on a 15A breaker unless the breaker is bad, the wiring or a connection is loose somewhere between the breaker and the microwave, or the microwave's magnetron or high voltage transformer are failing and drawing extra current.

Microwaves should really be on the own separate breaker if at all possible. Plus, the more a breaker trips, the more work out it gets.

Have you measured the voltage at the outlet? If that's off, current and power will be affected. It should be about 110-125VAC.

A good power test for outlet and wiring integrity is a toaster, toaster oven, or hair dryer rated at about 1500 watts.

If it doesn't run and heat steadily, then there may be a problem with the house wiring or breaker.

If it passes this test, the problem is likely in the microwave.

We're happy to help and we appreciate your thoughtful rating of our answer.
