Try hooking up only the power supply connector to the motherboard. That way we can rule out whether its a piece of hardware that is shorting out the motherboard.
If the power supply is still acting up then try another known good working power supply. If it turns on like normal then your original power supply is bad. If the power supply still doesn't turn on then you know at that point the motherboard is bad and would need to be replaced.
