Question about Kenmore Grilling

I have had a Kenmore Outdoor Gas Smoker for several years and it's worked fine, but this year started leaving a coating of soot on the food, and the flame is mostly yellow. The User Guide suggested cleaning the holes in the burner, which I did, but that didn't help. Any suggestions?

Ben, the burner holes were a good start. If you removed the burners to clean them. If not, it left a lot of debris inside the burners. Also, the Venturi valves may be clogged (Spiders love them) which would affect the air to gas ratio, Which would mean the burners weren't/aren't burning cleanly. If you didn't remove the burners, that's what you need to do, before anything else.

The propane burner has a slide opening somewhere before the burner so the gas/air mixture can be adjusted to burn better and hotter. you get alot of soot because the gas is too rich, it needs more air mixed in before the burner. the air vent on top and bottom of the chamber has nothing to do with the gas/air mixture to the burner.

I noticed soot in my lp gas oven that had been clean. concerned when it started to ruin my food I decided to run the self cleaning cycle again. My whole house filled with toxic soot. My eyes were on fire...

Normally soot is from a range that hasn't been converted for the gas type, like natural or propane. It may be set up for natural when you're on propane or visa versa. Has this range ever worked properly without sooting?

We have a brinkmann smoke 'n pit charcoal grill $ smoker- the manual says to cure it- how do we do this and for how long? :-)

By cuing, they mean burning it for an hour or 2, before using it to grill or smoke food. Coat the grill grates with a light coating of vegetable oil, before firing up the charcoal. Maintain a temperature of 325 - 350 degrees F for half an hour with the hood closed and a half hour with the hood raised.. After that, the grilling part of the grill - smoker should be cured. The smoker part, other than cleaning, doesn't need much curing. As the temps for smoking don't exceed 225 degrees F.

Can a gas heater after years of good use - start emitting carbon dioxide? What about black ashes or soot?

yes yes yes. if you are having black soot build up in the burner compartment you have a problem.the air/fuel mixture has changed. you need to stop using and get the heat exchanger cleaned. this can be done with a long bottle brush coat hanger or such. remove the burners and away you go clean clean clean what a mess.anyway once cleaned reassamble burners and check all gas fittings for leakage with soapy water. after main burner comes on make sure the flames are straight up and not floating around and a nice blue in color some orange is ok but no yellow. normaly a plugged heat exchanger does not mean a bad heat exchanger. watch the flame before the fan comes on and after.the flame should not change. if it start to waver you may have a nother problem and you should not use and call a heating company

Night store heaters creating soot.

Hi soot is incomplete combustion , so there could be something on the elements causing this to burn off soot google the heater there are some things on the web about this , hope this helps

Propane grill leaves soot on everything

Change your gas regulator and connecting kit if it is more than a year old and living outside. The other possibility is, that if the unit is older, the burner holes have rotted out and become too large. Most grills have replacement burners readily available. Deal with the problem in the order I have presented the solutions and it should be just fine.

Soot from gas dryer!

have you recently changed from natural gas to liquid propane, or visversa? if so, this could be the problem. especially natural gas to lp.
