Sounds like either cluster problems with your hard drive or possible hardware sector damage, I would start by going to my computer right click on your C drive and choose properties then choose the tools tab the first tool on the list should be check disk. as soon as you run the check disk it will ask you do you want to schedule a check disk, select yes and reboot your computer. The windows check disk will start a very long process of checking your entire disk for errors or problems and attempt to fix them. In most cases that I have come across this issues signifies a hardware issue that may not fail for several months but finally will. I would replace the hard drive if the check disk does not work. most box stores will actually test the drive before they sell you the hard drive. Since you still have access to windows i would defiantly start backing up your important files and data while you still can.
hope this advice helps good luck and please reply if you have any questions thru this processes.

your HDD may be corrupted, re-installing windows vista is one option. Your best bet is if you have/ can obtain a copy of windows vista run setup and try the repair wizard in the windows vista setup, the wizard automatically finds errors and missing files and replaces them therefore solving any errors in your HDD. you can also try to use the recovery wizard from your recovery disc. best of luck

Dell Optiplex Gx280 - cant detect two IDE hard drives

Hi,

You should attach two hard drives on primary ide. Set both jumpers to cable select ( or one on end is master, middle one is slave). The one at the end of the cable is where your o/s should be. You could try putting the third on seconday, along with your dvd rom.

My computer will not read any of my disk or install

when you say disk did you mean hard disk? if you do... did you recenlty install a new hard disks?... if you did... did you check the jumper-master-slave configuration when installing the new hard disk?
only one hard disk can be configured as master in each ide channel. set up to master (not single) the one on the end of the ide cable and set up to slave the one attached to the midlle of the ide cable.
check that both hard drives are properly attached to the cable and that the power cable is properly seated.

when you say disk did you mean cd rom disks or dvd disks?
does it work in other computers? if it doesnt.. you cd/dvd disks may be the problem
are you trying to read a dvd disk on a cd rom only drive... you can't read a dvd in a cd rom drive.
if you cd/dvd rom drive should read the disk you're putting in, check in device manager if your system detects the cd/dvd rom drive. if it doesn't: check the physical connections (reseat ide cable, check jumper configuration for slave and master on your cd/dvd rom drive and check that the power cable is properly seated), check also in device manager the properties of the cd/dvd rom drive and check if it says on device status if the device is working correctly. if it doesn't post the error code that it may give you or google a solution with error code.

suggestion.. be more specific when posting your questions.. that way it will be easier for a solution to be provided as your issue could be interpreted in different ways

Motherboard problem

Hi Conor, every SATA drive is a master drive. With that in mind you're SATA must have windows installed on it. Please disconnect the data cable & power cable's from the IDE drives.
(Do not reconnect either IDE untill you have finished).
Install windows on the SATA drive. Install all the needed drivers, than update windows. When finished Check the pin setting on the IDE drives. Set one as the "master with a slave" & the other as the slave. Than you can add both into the system. If you had windows on one of the IDE's just delete the root files on that drive so it does not conflict with the new windows on the SATA drive. Go in the bios make sure you have the SATA drive as the boot drive & not either of the IDE drives. If the system still shuts down after all this, try replacing the data cable for the IDE drives (Both should be on the same data cable). Swap the power connector from the CD-ROM drive to the IDE.
Next, if you're system still shuts down after adding either of the IDE drives, than swap the ports. Connect the CD-ROM to the primary IDE port on the board & the IDE hard drive to the IDE slave port. (This is for testing only). Double check all power connections from the power supply to the motherboard. Leave the case opened. Look at the board when booted. Watch for the the case LED's lighting up & flashing cr-rom's LED flashes, look at the CPU fan. Make sure all fan's are running & listen for the drives running.
Let me know if anything changed or not. Post any thing odd or if any thing did or didn't work & I'll go from there. Everything is a test & error soulation. One change at a time.
