Question about Dell Latitude D800 Notebook

2 Answers

I'm trying to run a live cd on my Dell Latitude D800. I changed the boot order so that the "CD/DVD/CD-RW Drive" is first in the lineup and made sure that it is enabled. For some reason, it just won't boot from this drive. The BIOS version is A09. Any suggestions? Thank you.

First thing I would do is ensure that the Boot CD will boot on another computer, then I would try a known working boot CD like a windows disc or the like in the current machine, just to ensure both the CD and the device are working, also make sure you have written the image to a compatable CD, I see you list it as a CD-RW, make sure the cd is a - and not a +, also that it is a not a CD only drive and you are trying to book to a image written to a DVD.

Let me know how you get on with these, if it fixes it then please leave positive ratings, and if not, please feel free to continue feeding back information so we can try some other things.

This sounds like your DVD/CD drive is going bad. If it was a driver issue you would probably get an error of "no disk in drive".
Try running diagnostics on your computer to seeif you have a hardware problem. You should have a CD that came with thecomputer that has "Diagnostics and Utilities" listed under contents.Boot form this CD and run the extended diagnostics.
If you don't have the CD you can go to www.support.dell.com andselect "Drivers and Downloads". Enter the "service tag" (serialnumber) of the computer. You can then download "Diagnostics" .
To boot from a CD disk, power on your computer and tap the key tobring you to the "One time boot menu". Insert the CD into the top CD/DVD driveand then select "Boot from CD/DVD" and hit key. Select the"Run the 32 Bit Dell Diagnostics.
If you have issues trying to boot form this CD or running the diagnostics then you CD/DVD drive needs to be replaced.

Computer boots up but then goes into a black screen I have run a Dignostic on it and I get an DST Short Test Error Code 100-0146. This is a Dell Latitude D600. Thanks In Advance

This error indicates that your hard disk drive or the circuitry that controls the hard drive is defective.
Either your hard drive is defective or the motherboard.

You can remove or change the Windows User oradministrator's password. You need access to a computer with Internet access todownload the Hiren's Boot CD and burn it onto a CD. Then insert this CD into the laptop/computer and boot upthe laptop/computer with the Hiren's CD and follow the instructions. There are very useful utilities CD and it a Linux boot CDwhich contains quite a lot of Utility programs including a password removalprogram. Dell Latitude D800-Win XP- My Dvd/rw wont write

Because you lost two devices, the DVD and the wireless mini card, I believe your problem is a drivers issue.
You should make sure you do not have any Malware that is removing these drivers.
If you have access to the Internet download and install Malwarebytes. It has a quick scan that will ID any infections.
Then get the newest drivers for those two devices from Dell's support site.
Before you install the drivers, remove those devices in Control Panel.

Can i boot from usb

Hi,

I'm sorry but the answer is no.

You only have floppy, hard drive and cd-rom options. With some Dell models the USB is seen as a secondary hard drive from within the BIOS so maybe (if your bios supports it) you can change boot order there.

Usually thats not the case so you mainly have to boot from the CD/DVD to install or run a DOS or linux command.

Regards.

try and roll back the drivers...also another way is to try and boot your machine off the cd drive..if it boots of the drive then you knoie that the drive is working and it is a driver error..if it wont boot off the drive the drive is probablly bad..make shure when trying to boot off the drive that you change your settings in your bios to for to boot from cd..

Boot a Sony DVD RW DRU-840A drive in DELL precision 530

Have you tried changing the boot order.

If you're trying to use it as a boot device you need to tell the system to boot the cd /dvd drive FIRST and of course you need to have a bootable cd / dvd in the drive.

Let me know if you're already tried this.
