SOURCE: I have a Singer mod 9134 sewing machine. It keeps

Try inserting the bobbin in the reverse direction. Most machines take a bobbin clockwise or counterclockwise and it can make a difference. Also try a new needle, a bad needle is often the problem believe it or not.

It keeps giving the broken thread error but the thread is never broken. What am I doing wrong?

There will be a sensor that has either failed or needs adjusting, ....suggest you speak to a Singer service technician and ask for advice and a quote.

I can't seem to ever get the tension right on my "singer simple". no matter what i do, the stiching is a problem. this is my second machine with the same problem, is this a mfr defect or...

Probably operator error. Make sure the machine is threaded right, make sure the bobbin is threaded properly, change the needle.... even though you think the needle is sharp. Make sure you are using the right thread. If you have bargain thread, throw it out. Use Coats & Clark, which is still reasonably priced. My friend has a lower end Singer that was acting up ... loose threads on the bottom of the fabric, which means upper tension .... we did the simple thing of changing the thread. It worked, and the machine is sewing beautifully.
