I have a Brother HL-5280DW printer. I have replaced the filter cartridge, shook it side to side as instructed. slid the plastic button across and back 10 or more times. the printing is coming out with spots of ink on the paper and some skipping on the printed words and lines. help

hi try re installing the software of the printer .completely uninstall first the previous software of your printer then install it again.to begin with the installation do no connect first the printer usb cable run first the CD the follow the wizard instruction installation.wait till the wizard prompt you to connect the printer and power it on.in this process the computer will automatically search your printer.then click next.until installation is successful.
you can also replace your USB connector for your printer if the computer cannot detect your printer..

Two things to try:

1) Get some electrical tape and look at either sides of the toner cartridge, you'll see two clear plastic inlet circles on both sides, try to cover these up with electrical tape and try again.

2) If it still reports no toner then try to picture where those two plastic parts rest while they're inside the machine; with the cartridge and drum removed looking at that spot on either side of the inside (flashlights help here!) there will be other clear plastic parts here as well:
With a lint free rag and no cleaners or chemicals try to clean off both of these pieces of plastic (they may be inside circular holes), don't press too hard just trying to get dust or debris off of them.
If still nothing you could try cleaning them off with a Q-Tip and rubbing alcohol.

If STILL nothing then the toner sensor and possibly the toner LED will need to be replaced, these are roughly $20 each (depending on local mark up) and would need to be replaced by a service technician.

If it's under warranty you can contact brother and they'll send you to a shop and will be fixed for free, if not you'll have to call around to find someone who can work on Brother machines and try to get a quote on how much they'd charge you for those parts plus an hour of labor. (Shouldn't take longer than that)

How to Change a Toner Cart in a Brother HL 2040

The Brother HL 2040 laser printer has a toner cartridge that supplies toner to the drum assembly so that the printer can print properly. When the LED on the front of the printer indicates you are low on toner, you will need to replace the toner cartridge to maintain good print quality. Fortunately, the toner cartridge can be replaced without any special tools.

Instructions
Things You'll Need:

* Replacement toner cartridge (part number TN350 or TN360)
* Paper towel or scrap paper



Grasp the front cover of the printer and pull it toward you to open the toner door. Reach into the printer and grab the combined toner cartridge/drum assembly. Lift up slightly and pull it out of the front of the printer.

Place the cartridge and drum on a paper towel, spare sheet of paper, rag or other surface that can get dirty. Loose toner particles may spill from the cartridge.

Press the blue locking lever on the cartridge/drum unit to unlock the toner cartridge from the drum. Lift the toner cartridge up and away from the drum unit. Dispose of the old toner cartridge in accordance with your local regulations. Seal it in a plastic bag to keep loose toner from spilling.



Gently shake your new toner cartridge back and forth a few times to distribute the toner evenly across the width of the cartridge. Remove the plastic protective cover from the bottom of the cartridge.


Place the new toner cartridge onto the drum unit and press it down gently until it locks into place. The blue locking lever will automatically click into place. Verify that the toner cartridge is securely connected to the drum.


Locate the corona wire cleaner tab at the front of the drum unit. Slide it back and forth several times to improve the print quality of the drum. Set the tab back in the home position when finished.


Slide the combined toner cartridge/drum unit back into the printer and close the front cover.

Most Brother printers need manually reseting when either the drum or toner is replaced. Sometimes it doesn't need it and sometimes it does. Don't ask me why because I have no clue lol. What you do is open the Front Panel button that corresponds on the top with the blue botton. If you hold it from the inside of the printer until all the lights flash ontop of the pritner, then you let go and close the door. This should reset the printer. I hope this helps and I explained myself well lol

Take out the drum and toner shut the door and power up, if the noise is still there during the power up short run, you probably need a new fuser. If the noise goes away with toner and drum removed you probably need a new toner. New ones, especially generic toners are too hard to turn and make that noise.

The new toner cartridge is not properly installed. Remove the toner cartridge and reinstall it.

The page numbers are 63 TO 67 if you look at the page counter.

Did you pull the plastic tape on the new cartridge?

The green tabs that you have to slide are under the color cartridges, so remove the three color cartridges and you will see three green tabs, to slide the tab across the wire you have to first open the translucent plastic wire cover, then slide the green tab across the wires and return it to it's original position, close the wire covers, replace the color cartridges, and reassemble the printer. On this printer, the alarm and data lights mean that the toner cartridge is empty. When you replace the toner, be sure to slide the corona wire cleaner across and back. This is the small light blue plastic piece on top of the drum cartridge. You'll see a small arrow in the plastic. Just slide it back and forth once or twice each time you replace the toner cartridge.
