Question about Kenmore 9438 Range

1 Answer

Hello, One of the elements of my glass top range stopped working some time ago. I need to review how to lift the top, (I saw it done it in the past, yet I don't feel too confident to do it myself), however, I need to know where can I get the best and lowest replacement part. Please let me know if you have the answer, if you are offering repair plans, I am not interested, if one service call, how much would you charge, my living zip code is 33444 thanks

SOURCE: kenmore range

You said, you have a 12 year old Kenmore Range. Smooth-top, over which only 3 eyes now work.
And you've lived with this for a couple of years. But now the bottom element burned out.
It sent sparks flying as it glowed brightly and released fire as this bright spot moved around from one side of the element to the other and finally went out.
You would like to replace whatever is needed.
Please help determine what is needed.

This is the old model # PLT083-2. You see it inside the door.

My advice is that after 12 years and a number of failures. especially the sparks!
You should replace this range! Do not put good money into bad!
I believe you deserve the pleasure and comfort of a new range before the holidays!

Here is a report I just read !
I believe it will help you decide and you may find it very interesting!

Repair or replace you appliances?

When to pull the plug on your old Appliance
It nearly always makes sense to undertake simple do-it-yourself repairs,
such as replacing a gasket on a refrigerator or a freezer.

Should you pay for a repair or buy a new model?
The answer depends mostly on the age of your appliance,
how much you bought it for,and the cost of the repair.

Follow these guidelines:

When a repair makes sense.

If your appliance is under warranty or less than four years old
paying for a repair makes sense.
Note that appliances under warranty might require service from a factory-authorized technician;
readers have found them on a par with independent repairers.

When a repair might be a wise choice.

If your appliance is out of warranty and is four to seven years old,
it might make sense to pay for a repair. Customers generally pay $100 to $200 for a repair.
But you might want to buy a new model even at this stage,
given that today's models are quieter and have added features.
Higher energy efficiency is another plus: Energy Star-qualified models made after April 28, 2008,
are 43 percent more efficient than conventional models built before 2001 and 56 percent
more efficient than those built before 1993.

When it pays to replace.

The repair costs more than half the price of a comparable new appliance.
Data also shows that it doesn't pay to fix a less-expensive appliance
six or more years old .
Thanks to better recycling programs, less than 10 percent
of a appliances you replace is likely to end up in a landfill.

I believe I may have solved your problem, with some Profesional sound advice!

SOURCE: kenmore glass top range left front large burner out

check the burner socket, it is likely that contact is being lost where the burner connects to the hardwired portion of the system (the socket). It is not unusual for the socket to "burn up" when there is a poor connection to the burner resulting in the burner being replaced and the new burner not working or working intermittently.

Model #jb700tok3 how to lift the stove top. heat warning lite will not go off

Hello. REMOVE POWER FROM THE RANGE NOW! Using a headlamp or flashlight, open the range door and look underneath the cooktop at the front. (The door covers the screws when its closed) There should be 3-4 screws depending on the model, usually black, that have to be removed. The cooktop will now lift up from the front. It is hinged(open hinges so be careful because the glass cooktop can be easily dislodged off the hinged area) underneath the control panel on the left and right sides. The elements will be mounted to the bottom of the glass. You will need to identify the defective element temperature sensor using a voltage/ohm meter. Element designation 56, LR and RR, part number WB30T10129, 6-inch size. Element designation 57, LF, 9-inch dual, part number WB30T10133. Element designation 58, RF, 12 inch, part number WB30T10130. If you are going to attempt the repair, take pictures of the wiring AND clips for each element before you start. Mark the new element with an arrow or dot, etc. with the mounting clip location numbers from the old element( see the numbers for each of the positioning holes around the rim. BE EXTREMELY CAREFUL NOT TO TOUCH THE HEATING FOILS AT ALL--THEY ARE VERY DELICATE! Have a friend/helper hold the cooktop up while you work--this will make the job much easier. I hope I helped you!

How to lift up glass top for heating element replacement.

Most of these units have a few screws underneath the top at the front lip where the top of the door closes. Remove the screws and you should be able to lift the top up. Most of them also have a metal bar you pull down or up depending on the make and model on the side to hold the top up once you open it

I broke the ceramic top on my Frigidare Range. I

Hello, the top for your slide in would cost your $285.25 . First turn power off to the machine or unplug. To change the top you would open the oven door then remove the screws in the top near the door latch. You will have 3 or 4 screws one on the left the right and one or two in the middle section. The glass will then lift from the front and you will notice the surface elements will raise with the glass. You will have to remove the screws that hold the brackets and they you can just sit them down. Be carefull not to unplug any of the wires on the elements, and be carefull of the insulation. It will really cause skin rash. Once you have removed the elements you can lift the glass away and install the new one. I do have one new one available at my store. I can ship it to you for the price listed above. Please let me know if you have any more questions. You can also see me on ebay under the name AndersonAppliance2009

The oven will not light on my Whirlpool gas oven Mod SF368LEPQ 2. The stove top burners still light.

Sounds like you need an bake element ignitor if the bake doesn't work but if the broil also doesn't work, it could be the electronic clock/timer control. the part number for the bake ignitor is 8054129 .Best off to call a reliable service company such as Sears.

Would anybody know where the fuses are on old stoves? I have an old stove, which I am renting with my apartment. There is no brand name on it but since it is olive-green, it must go back to the 70s, if...

Hello Lucie,
If the range or oven is receiving power but doesn't work, the unit may have its own fuse or circuit breaker assembly. This assembly is usually located under the cooktop of the range. In some units, lift the top of the range to gain access to the fuse assembly; or lift the elements, remove the drip pans, and look on the sides of the cabinets. Inside the oven, look to the back to spot the fuse assembly. I would highly recommend that you remove or disable power to the stove prior to making any component changes...
If the unit has this additional fuse or breaker system, components such as the oven light, the range heating elements, the timer, and a self-cleaning feature may be separately fused. If these components or features fail to work, don't overlook the possibility that the fuses have blown. To replace a blown fuse, unscrew the old fuse and install a new one of the same type and electrical rating. If the unit has circuit breakers, push the breaker or reset button, which is usually located on the control panel.
I would think that your landlord ( since you are renting) would be responsible for the maintence and/or replacement of your stove,,,
Good Luck..

Glass top stove hard to work

Glas tops usually detect both heat and time of unit on cycle. notice how burner turns on and off when on lower settings. the biggest issue i get on glass tops is cookware. the cookware should "FLAT!!" bottoms, owners manual suggests using a straight edge to determine. I have tested very expensive cookware ($200 a pot) and it seems to not be flat enough. much expensive cookware is designed to be used on gas tops. pans should also be of a medium weight. I tell people before they buy a glass top, plan on spending nearly as much on your cookware as on the range. A good set of Calphalon (not an advertisement) non-stick is about $500 -$600.
The top has built in sensors that shut the burner down when heat is trapped in an air pocket under the pan. this causes the burner to shut down prematurely and take much longer to cook.

Gemini Range Dual Burner

Unfortunately, you cannot repair one element of a dual burner. It all comes as one unit. When one portion of a dual or triple element goes bad, you must replace the whole element. I believe the part number is 1032746 and runs about $70. You will have to lift the glass top to access the burner elements. If you decide to pursue this on your own follow these steps: 1. Unplug range and/or turn off main breaker. 2. Open oven door to access screws under front edge of cooktop. Remove two screws and the top should tilt up. 3. The top will not stay up on it's own, so you will need some assistance holding it up. Some ranges have a couple of disconnect plugs that you can unplug, so you remove the entire top and lay it somewhere to work on. If this is the case with yours (as I suspect it is), lay some soft towels down on the kitchen table or counter top and lay the cooktop upside down. This will make it much easier to work on. 4. Remove affected element by disconnecting the wires first. You may want to write down how they came off, so you can be sure to reconnect them in the right order. 5. Remove mounting brackets holding element in place. Pay particular attention to the numbering scheme on the bottom of the element and where the brackets are mounted. The new element usually doesn't come with new brackets which means you have to take the brackets off the old element and put them on the new element. Make sure you install them in the same numbered holes as they were located before. 6. Reconnect wires and reinstall cooktop, making sure you reconnect the disconnect plugs if equipped. Now, be careful when working on the cooktop while it is upside down. Make sure you don't apply too much pressure on the glass or you could crack it. Also, use extreme care NOT to touch the element surface as the oils from you hands can cause hot spots and effectively ruin it. The bake light material in which the element is mounted is also very fragile. DO NOT put to much pressure on it or it may crack and break. Once you get the cooktop reinstalled and power reapplied, op test it to make sure BOTH elements are working. It is normal to see a little bit of sparking at first with new elements and/or an odor. Test the entire range of the element and make sure it regulates like it should. I hope this helps you.
