The power cord isn't the only path the monitor needs. The connection between the system and the display can have problems.

With the power off: I would at least pull the signal cable and re-plug it several times to see if the problem leaves.

If it still shuts down, (power off again) open the system box, touch any part of the unpainted chassis metal to discharge any static buildup you might have; locate the video card (if it isn't an on-board chip), remove any screw holding the card in and rock the card in its slot to wipe the contacts, press back into the slot, replace the screw removed and try again.

Since the problem could also be caused by a dead backlight or the power supply for it, try to view at various angles to see if there is anything discernable on the screen.
If you can identify any content, then it is the backlight or supply.

Depending on your skill and the construction of the monitor, replacing the fluorscent backlight is a possible home fix.
If the high voltage power supply has failed, this is an item for a tech.

Follow the following solutions, this should fix up your trouble
1. Turn yourmonitor on. It should be on for at least 20 minutes before you continue.
2.Press the"Auto/Select" button on the front of your computer's monitor. Thescreen will be wavy while the adjustment happens. When the screen stops beingwavy, the faded colors should no longer be visible.
Follow steps 1 and 2 if you do not have a disk for the monitor.

Monitor shuts off after approx 2 min when i start. i turn monitor switch off and turn on again and stays on approx 2 min and shuts off again

Go to control panel > Power options and check the power settings there. Are the settings for "Turn off monitor" set to 2 minutes? Increase the time and see if there is any changes.
If the above does not solve it, it's quite likely that your monitor's power supply is giving problems. Turn it in for warranty/repair.

Monitor shuts down about 5 seconds after turning it on .

I have been looking at a Dell E228WFP with the same fault as previous posters on this forum. It works for a few minutes and then the back light turns off. With the PCBs out of the case it runs for a little longer. Applying heat to the inverter board using a hair dryer causes it to turn off in about 5 seconds.
If you are after a quick test to see if your monitor is suffering from the R821 'resistor problem' then simply remove R820 (labelled 564), power up the monitor and heat the inverter board with the hair dryer. If it no longer turns off then R821 is probably your problem. I have shown the relevant section of the schematic below.
I have not had a chance to make appropriate measurements to determine a suitable replacement value for R821. Reducing it from 1M to 560K or 470K will certainly lower the error voltage being fed back to IC801. If anyone wanted to determine a suitable value empirically then I would suggest replacing R821 with a 470K resistor in series with a small 500K preset and determining the highest value that allows it to operate correctly when heated. I would then back this value off by about 10% and fit the nearest fixed value 0603 SMT resistor.
I have now carried out the above and R821 needs to be 470k to ensure reliable operation. If I had more time I would look into why this change is required....

Can you tell me why my monitior shuts off when I leave the computer on. This has happened numerous times

Simple, your monitor power is set to turn off automatically at the particular time (maybe 5 mins, 10 mins, 1 hour etc...) You can reset this by following the steps below: For XP)- 1. Right Click on the Desktop - Properties - Screen Saver - Power - Turn off monitor and set it to Never. More or less similar with Vista and Windows 7, Good luck.

If you have soldering iron and can place an order at DigiKey.com (and are willing to get your hands down on this), this is a rather easy fix with some direction. You basically will be replacing some failing capacitors inside the unit.
