There's a very small hole on the front of the cd\dvd drive you need a long stiff piece of wire or a pin and push it quite hard into the hole, which should push the draw open.

?Is there an easy way to do backup on a Dell pc?

buy a hard disk (blank) the same se physically and in capacity as the one in your computer. Set this up to be a second hard disk or as an eternal (USB) hard disk for your computer.
Obtain from the internet a program for clones (of hard disks); create a CD from this; ensure your computer is set to boot from CD first.
Insert the CD into your CD drive. Restart your computer.
Proceed to clone FROM your original hard disk TO your new, blank hard disk. BE CAREFUL THAT YOU DO NOT CLONE THE BLANK DISK TO THE ORIGINAL DISK ELSE YOU WILL HAVE YOU WILL NOTHING. This could take hours. Your should ensure your PC is not interrupted during this process.
At the end the process you should be left with your original unaltered hard disk, plus an identical copy of it, which can be inserted in place of your original if that goes wrong.

This is just one way of backing up.

The disc-tray on my computer tower-block (where you insert discs) is not opening at all. It makes a noise when you press the 'eject' buttons as if it is trying to open, but it never does....

Its either got a disk jammed or the mechanism is slipping.

Look at the drive bezel, just underneath the drawer, you should see a small hole. Straighten out a paper clip and push it into the hole, quite firmly. The draw should open. This is the failsafe procedure for opening such drives.

With luck, you drive should operate normally after this.

DVD is stuck and drive is not listed

Look very closely at your dvd drive bezel, you should be able to see a small hole usually just below the draw.

Straighten out a paper clip and push it, quite firmly into the hole, this is the failsafe method of opening a locked/jammed disk drive.

I have cd that won't eject. it is a "green" cd and is thinner that standard cd-roms. I have a Dell Vostro 1510 and am using Windows Vista premium.

There is usually a little hole in the dvd draw facia that you can push a thin object like a paper clip into. this manually opens the draw

You can try cleaning it with a cleaning disk but otherwise it does sound like the drive is going bad.
