Question about Pentair Minimax NT Heater

1 Answer

Pentair minimax model 100DSI gives 3 flashes "ignition lockout". I checked both high limit switches, the pressure switch and the thermal fuse...all of these are OK. Any suggestions as to what to check next and how to check it.

Thanks for the response, but everthing you indicated is already stated in the manual. Please note that the heater continues to go into ignition lockout mode after resets. After each reset, i can detect the spark for about 4 seconds, and then the control unit gives the 3 flashes. In all attempts, i get the 3 flashes, and I do not smell any gas whatsoever, which leads me to believe there isn't even pilot gas. Could it be the gas valve and not the ignition control box. In any case how do i check the control box and the gas valve?

IMPORTANT! IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT NO MORE THAN TWO IGNITION ATTEMPTS IN SUCCESSION BE PERFORMED FOR NATURAL GAS SYSTEMS . BEFORE FURTHER IGNITION
ATTEMPTS, WAIT AT LEAST FIVE MINUTES FOR GAS TO CLEAR.

1. Should the main burner fail to light, or flame is not detected during the trial for ignition period the
control will go into lockout and the valve will be turned off immediately.
2. Recovery from lockout requires a manual reset by resetting the thermostat or turning off the ON/OFF switch for a minimum period of 5 seconds.

If the heater continues to go into Ignition Lockout mode:
The ignition control box will spark the pilot and detect that it is lit. These boxes are very reliable but they can fail.

If you see the spark, but the pilot is not lighting, it sounds like your gas valve is not operating correctly, or the safety shut-off is closing the valve. If you smell gas, but it is not lighting, your Ignition Control box has probably failed. Here is your Ignition Control box:http://www.aqua-man.com/row_num.asp?Ic=2... The Thermopile Generator can shut off the gas valve if it has deteriorated. Here is the Thermopile Generator:http://www.aqua-man.com/row_num.asp?Ic=2... The gas valve can be found here:http://www.aqua-man.com/schematic.asp?kc...

My temperature says HI. but my temp is not warm

The error code is HL, not hi
This is telling you the high limit switch is tripping(safety feature)
Lack of flow, corroded heat exchanger, bad high limit switch, bad thermal regulator.....
Take these steps to try and get it narrowed down.
With heater off
Locate the high limit switch, unplug the two wires connected to it, put a jumper wire in between those two wires. Turn on the heater, if it fires you need to wait till it heats all the way up. If if heats up with no fault in the cycle then most likely it's a bad high limit switch, if it continues to trip then thermal regulator, it may need both parts.
If it doesn't fire at all then you will probably need a professional

Why does the display show "HI" all the time?

This means that either there is a bad high limit switch, or you are getting a bad burn, or the pump is not moving water fast enough. With the power off remove the panel on the side above the plumbing.
There will be a pressure switch seated right on top of the header, then right below that, there are 2 high limit switches (1" round disks) Most typically, the pressure switch will start to leak and currode the contacts of the high limit switch, but some investigating will be necessary.

Heater not working

yor heater has 3 high limits and a flame rollout switch(aka thermal fuse). be advised that bypassing safetys is not recommended and is dangerous.these component failures are symptoms. we need to find causes.if limits are failing look at sooted or possibly a nest on your heat exchanger. if its a flame rollout problem look at obstructed burner or oriface.
