Question about AT&T HFAI 10 Phone (3161-161)

1 Answer

We have an AT&T HFAI 10 Phone that is ringing very low when someone calls in. If we plug the phone in a different jack it rings normally but when we plug the phone in the jack in the office it rings very low. What is the problem?

Likely there is a problem with one of the wires connected to the jack in the building. Try yet another phone in that jack. If it experiences the same problem you need to check the wiring. Likely you will find a problem at either the splices someplace or the jack itself. When people work around the wiring, often they knock a wire loose. with these electronic phones, they sometimes work marginally suffering low ring volumess, noise or other failures.

I have tried every configuration of the wiring I can think of. I have 2 jacks and a Ring Selector for the fax machine.

What is the make or brand/model of the phone you are referring to? Does it has a line 1/2 selector or a ringer selector on the panel?
Maybe the phone you have has a selector on its side.
I need more info.
Best regards.

Our telephone only rings twice and hangs up.

Possible short on the line.find the network interface on the back or side of the house(usually next to the power meter).open it up, disconnect the small cord and plug your phone in (phone should be corded) have someone call you.if the phone rings 2 times, chances are it is the telephone comany side. call the telephone co.if it rings normally, it is on your side.fix it yourself, call someone else or call the telephone co.(ex att installer 34 yrs)

I can make calls but phone doe not ring

You said "it seems to ring once then stops." One possible cause of what you're describing is called a "Ring Trip." It is characterized when the button that flashes to indicate an incoming call changes to steady red (which would normally indicate the call is answered) although no one actually answered the call. If that occurs, then you have to test to see whether you can tell where the problem is coming from. If you unplug all the phones, you can then call in (from a cell phone or other phone that's not part of the system) and see if the incoming call rings unanswered, as it should when no phones are attached. If all rings in OK, plug just one phone in at a time and call in to see if any particular phone causes the problem. If one causes the ring trip, then disconnect that broken phone. If ringing still stops when no phones are attached, you'll have to disconnect the phones' connection wires (Station Wires) at the phone system box that plug into the "Station Ports" (label them before you unplug any!). Do not unplug the plugs for the wires that feed phone company lines into the phone system, the jacks are called CO line ports. With the "Station" wires unplugged, see if If all rings in OK by calling in from a cell phone or other phone that's not part of the system. If all rings in OK, plug just one station wire in at a time to see if one causes the problem. If one station wire causes the ring trip, then disconnect that troublesome wire and inspect its "system box jack" and its phone jack for water damage, carpet cleaning solvent, exterminator spray or any other corrosive liquid damage. Sometimes a staple through a wire where there's humidity can cause the problem. This process will find the offending wire, jack or phone that causes a "Ring Trip." There are many other possibilities, but the extremely limited description you've provided "it seems to ring once then stops." doesn't help me send you a better answer yet.

When callers ring our number they are unable to make a connection. Sometimes the phone will ring once and then disconnect

On our side of the pond, this often means there is water in the line somewhere. High dampness coupled with insulation that has degraded can cause low resistance paths. This usually doesn't cause any problem when you place a call, although it can sometimes cause crackling or other noise. But when someone rings your line, a high voltage is sent to operate the ringer. The low resistance then makes the telephone equipment think you've answered, but since your phone is still hung up it then disconnects the call. Sometimes the phone may not even ring, sometimes it gives a little peep or even a whole ring.

This problem may be due to damage to a telephone jack in your home. I've seen it caused by water when someone was cleaning the floor, and also when a jack near a window was soaked during a storm. The trouble may also be in the outside wiring, which should make it the responsibility of BT to repair. It's also possible, although rare, for a dodgy phone to cause this if there's a problem in its ringer circuit.

Hope this gives you some help in locating the cause and fixing it. Thanks for using Fixya!

I cannot send faxes on my HP 700. When I call my fax number it does not ring or answer. The unit is plugged in and the screen has normal information. It does print out sending failures.

Hello,

If your fax does not ring when you call the number then it is not properly connected to the phone line.
Try checking the connections on the fax and to the wall jack; make sure the phone cable is connected to the correct jack on the fax machine.

If this is all good and still no ringing, then you should try another telephone cable or try connecting the fax to another phone jack. The modems and jacks on fax machines rarely break down but if you have tried different wall jacks and different phone cables then you can finally assume that the fax machine is broken.

Thanks,

Pat

PIXMA MP780 will not receive fax with Verizon DSL connection. Before unit was ok with comcast cable, Note: I'm able to send fax. RBRANT

Solution: Contact local phone company to check the telephone wall jack for low ring voltage.

Ring-in Voltage Facsimile equipment?(fax machines), like other telephone anwering devices, require ring voltage at a telephone jack to answer automatically.? The ring voltage is one of the services provided by the local phone company.
  • Low ring-in voltage can cause short bursts of ring tones at the phone jack.
  • Callers may hear one or two ring back tones and then ringing will stop and nothing else will be heard.
  • Inside the home, the called party will hear a brief ring and then nothing else will be heard. If the telephone handset is lifted, the caller may be on the other end.
To check if the fax will not answer due to low ring-in voltage, do the following:
  1. Disconnect the fax at the telephone wall jack.

  2. If an answering machine is available, connect it directly to the telephone jack. If an answering machine is not available, connect a telephone to the telephone jack.

  3. Dial the fax line and see if the answering machine answers the call, listen for uncommon ring tones inside the home or check for similar symptoms as described above. If any of the above symptoms occur, please contact your local telephone company.

Intercome ringing

It sounds like the HFAI button on most of the sets is turned off. the HFAI (hands free answer intercom) button is located to the right of the SPKR key. With the handset down press the HFAI button. The green light next to it should light indicating that it is active. If the power goes out or if the phone is unplugged it will return to HFAI off status. hope that helps.

My fax comes on when my phone rings

You need to purchase a cross-over cable to use on your fax machine. This cable will change line 2 to line 1 for the fax so it will pick up the line when line 2 rings and not line 1.

If you want to use a regular cable you'll have to have someone rewire the jack in the wall to swap line 1 and line 2, then just plug the fax machine into this jack.

No ring out when line switched.

It could be that the line that you are connecting to is not the number that you think it is. call someone that has caller id and make sure that is the number you think it is. Do other phones ring when connected to that jack?

Does not ring

is the ringer on the base or phone on? check that first.if that's ok, then plug a regular corded phone into the phone jack and see if there is dial tone.if there isn't any, try other jacks in the house. if still not working, call your phone company.
