Compressor shuting down

Either the thermostat is prematurely shutting down the compressor or the latter is overheating and the clixon is shutting it down.

The defrost timer also will shut down the compressor and all fans but that is only once every 10 hours or so to defrost unit. In about t10 15 minutes the timer will turn the compressor back on.

Coleman central ac is not shutting down. Thermostat clicks off but compressor and fan keep running and cooling

This is either a stuck relay or contactor or the Tstat is bad.. Try shuting down the power to the unit and wait for about 3 munites and trun it back on .. if that does not clear it up My money is on a stuck contactor

For the past two days I have had to reset the main circuit breaker for the outside unit. It appears to be running fine now. I'm just wondering is this an indication of the compressor about to go bad,...

Bill, first thing, make sure the outdoor coil isn't stopped up with dirt. This will cause the compressor to overheat and possibly trip the breaker. If you you can check the amp draw that would be good. Look on the data tag on the outside unit and look for RLA or "running load amps". Running amp draw should never exceed this number, it should actually normally run 10% under RLA. If its real hot where you are like it is here (109) it will be running close to RLA.
If you coil is stopped up with dirt, etc., turn off the breakers, use you water hose and sprayer and carefully wash out the coil.
If all this fails, and your amp draw is good, change your breakers. Hope this helps , stay cool.. Mark

I have a Trane unit 2 Ton that was washed down with the unit running. Was told unit compressor changed tunes while doing so. i suspect the compressor is shorted since it will not come back on , fan is...

A 'short' would be indicated by a breaker tripping or a fuse blowing at the time you turn on the unit, so I don't think you are dealing with a short. Since the compressor is a 'sealed unit' it's doubtful if you harmed it. However, washing down an AC with it running is not advisable and in fact is very dangerous. Electricity and water do not mix and a person can easily electrocute himself/herself doing this. That being said I would make sure the entire unit has dried out and with all power off - then 'inspect' all the electrical components - i.e. wire connections and 'starter relay' to make sure everything is in good condition. The fact that the fan is running indicates the 'starter relay' is ok - again - I would check all the electrical components, especially where the wires connect to the compressor. My guess is you have a wire burnt off of the compressor which probably happened while the unit was being washed.

2 yr. old. worked great. Then started shuting down self changing setting to low. shortly after, shuts down after 3 min. no water collection, unit is hot. Took apart. Cleaned everything inside, and filter....

Robinson, it really sounds like the compressor is overheating. This may be caused by a low refrigerant gas in the compressor. Or the compressor's oil has leaked down. But, if you took the unit apart to clean it, I would think that you would have noticed an oily residue. If it is the compressor (other than needing to be recharged) it would cost almost as much to replace it, as it would be to buy a new unit.
At least with a new one, you'd have a one year warranty and more, if you purchase an extended warranty.

Hope this helped you.

Hello

Sounds like the compressor is shuting down on high heat. There could be a couple reasons for this.
1 Check that proper voltage is being supplied to compressor.
2 Freon level may be low. This would be a service call.
3 Bad or intermitent connection at thermostat.
4 Main contacts to compressor sticking, usually burnt or pitted.

The compressor will turn on for approx. 5 seconds and then cut, I have been told the compressor is bad, but it is only 6 years old...

Sounds like the compressor is shuting of on inernal thermal overload. Sorry that it's only 6 years old. More sorry that a typicall warranty is 5 years. In my area a typical replacement compressor, installed, will run between $1,500 and $2,000. A new condensing unit, if available, will run $1,000 more. Either way, make sure that the contractor explains to you, exactly how he intends to make sure that the system is cleaned, as this type of failure is typically a slow burn and is of the worst tyoe, most subject to repeat failure if not done properly.

SHARP Inverter Split Type A/C: Turns on, but the compressors shuts down after less than a minute. Diagnostic LED (at ourdoor unit control board) indicates 'AC abnormal current'. Measured current on...

Pull wires off compressor. Check contnuity between the
R and S.
R and C,
S and C
The two lowest numbers should add up to the highest number reading. (Example. 3.4 Between R and S
1.2 between R and C
S and C should read 4.6 or real close. )
If this does not check out like this, you have a bad compressor. Check between either R,S or C to ground. If you have continuity, you have a bad compressor. By what you said in description, it sounds to me like the run winding are bad inside compressor. After the compressor starts, it changes from the start windings to the run windings.
Please rate solution.
