Windows XP fails to recognize a USB Device explaining that the device is malfunctioning. My Canon Pixma MP500 will not print although it starts and appears to function properly. I have downloaded and reinstalled the drivers and have rebooted my computer without success.

I know my printer is functioning properly as I scanned a document and copied it to paper. As you point out the problem is in the communications between the printer and the computer. I do not have another cable to test as you suggest. I will try to get a new one tomorrow (when the stores are open) or have the existing one tested. Until that is done, do you have any other suggestions?

Hi,

Welcome to Fixya. If you have an error detected by XP that the Device is malfunctioning and you already install the drivers, You can try to use a different cable so that we can check if the problem is the cable that is connecting the computer and the printer. If all else fails after changing the cable then most likely that there is a problem with the printer. The printer will start because it can still received power however the problem here is the communication between the 2 devices. Usually cable can cause a problem with communication between the computer and the device.

If you have questions please let me know. Thanks for using Fixya.

Pixma MP500 will not print in black

Presumably you have just upgraded from XP to Vista. I think the old XP printer driver may still be in effect or Vista has given the printer a generic driver with no advanced properties. Have you tried completely removing the old driver, deleting the printer then installing the printer and new driver from scratch? Else try going to the printer device properties and update driver then direct the updater to the downloaded files.

Windows XP SP3 will not recognize the printer is connected.

It could be the cable, but most likly it is a damaged driver. try uninstalling the printer and all the drivers then reboot and resinstall it. You could also run "sfc /scannow" to see if any system files are damaged.
