Question about Refrigerators

1 Answer

Hi, I have a GE Monogram side by side refrigerator. Like many others, the ice maker works but not the water dispenser. I changed the water filter, but didn't help. Did the blow drier thing to unfreeze pipes. Didn't work. Vacuumed all the coils. Completely defrosted overnight. Didn't work. Finally pulled the fridge out and found that when I depress the water dispenser, all the water is running out the back through an extra tubing. I'm assuming this is the defrost water tube? The tube empties onto a metal tray that has some depressions but doesn't hold much and their are electrical wires all around it. It was overflowing all this time and emptying into my basement through the hole that the copper water line is pulled up through. Ughh! Nice mess to clean up down there still. The metal tray is permanant- you can't remove it to empty the water. I had to keep soaking it up with rags. I have 2 questions: 1. Am I missing the defrost tray under the fridge, or is this it? 2. Why is the water for the dispenser running through this (defrost?) tube onto my floor, and how do I fix that? Any help would be so appreciated- single mom and I can't afford to call a repair man. :( Thanks.

i have a voltage meter now, but how do I use it to check the stolenoids? They are enclosed in the tubing. I don't see how to get a lose end anywhere to measure the voltage.

Those cylindrical shaped things with wires connected to it are solenoids. Each one with different purpose. One should be for the ice maker, and the other one for the water. It's best to have an assistant depress the water dispenser while you look back there if the solenoid opens the water valve at the bottom rear of the refrigerator. If the solenoid is bad, you would have to replace the whole solenoid assembly. The part itself cost at least one hundred dollars to about 170 dollars. You may also find out the cause of the leak while someone press the dispenser as you observe whats going on at the bottom rear of the unit. Good luck

Thanks for your answer. The only water coming out from under the unit onto the floor comes from a plastic tube that's not connected to anything. There are no wires in it- just a plastic tube. It's not the freezer or water tube. Those are connected to the water valve.

The most probable cause is a bad solenoid then. Those solenoids have high failure rate and can be damaged easily by power surges. Good luck. If you want to check the solenoid get you a cheap multimeter and check it for continuity. The resistance on those solenoids are usually around a few hundreds (I have check some at 150 ohms). If it was bad you would get infinite resistance or open winding meaning electrcity will no longer flow through it. I have lowered the cost of repairs by rigging up solenoids from other units but it is a daunting task where I have to alter a lot of things so it will work. Some appliance shops may sell you a used one for a fraction of the cost. good luck those solenoids are almost impossible to repair for they have hair thin enamel wires.

Bummer. If the problem is the stelonoid, would the ice maker line still work? How is it routing the water through the drain tube now. Wasn't doing it earlier when i first started working on this problem. Also, am I missing the defrost tray, or is the metal tray it? Just doesn't seem like there is anywhere for much to drain into.
Sorry abouy all the questions. I know nothing when it comes to refrigerators.

Hello. My G.E. Monogram water dispenser trickles water after we get water from it. We have to keep a cup there to catch the excess water. How do I fix it so it stops as soon as we get water out of t

Try replacing the Water Valve. It is located in the back of the refrigerater, left side. You should see three tubes connected to it. This part fixes the following symptoms - Leaking water, Water dispenser will not dispense water, Ice maker will not make ice and Ice maker won't dispense ice. GE part#WR57X10032. The Water Valve is extreemly easy to replace. Only takes about 15 mins total time to remove, install and confirm. I just replaced mines..my problem went from leaking water to no water was dispensing at all. I have the GE Profile, it uses the same water valve as your GE Monogram. There is a You Tub video that also shows how to replace. Good Luck!

GE Monogram fridge is not dispensing water. Ice maker is working fine. Not a water filter issue. thanks -

Water and ice solenoid valve is one valve with two coils and exits.
The most posible case is the water side is coggled or coil broken and need to bee clean or a new valve

Water dispenser has stopped working. Ice maker still works and I've changed the water filter. Still nothing

There are two solenoid valves in the rear of the refrigerator. One that controls water for ice and one that controls water for door dispenser. If the water is not coming through when the button is pushed then have the proper solenoid valve replaced and enjoy. Hope this helps. good luck.

No water from Water dispensor

Have you checked your water valve? I dont have your model number but you could have what you call a double water valve and one side of it may be out, alternately you may need to change your water filter if you havent done that yet. I have seen were the water stops dispensing first and then stops making ice. have you changed the filter lately? If not change it then if that doesnt work check water inlet valve...

GE monogram side by side no ice water dispensed not cold

To actuate the ice maker pull the arm down and it is in the on position.

The water is actually cooled in the refrigerator section. However it is not designed for a continuous flow. It takes time for the heat to be removed between each water draw.

If your refrigerator temperature is not cold enough it will affect the water temperature also. Check the refrigerator compartment temperature with a thermometer.

Ge monogram water line

the water dispenser does not dispense water, although i can hear the motor running, but water is reaching the ice maker.
any tips?

You may have a clogged water line or filter something blocking the flow of the water or you may have to replace the filter or a water line – it may have a defective sending unit / pump and it would be wise to check it out with a regular service tech and to also check your owner’s manual for troubleshooting.
