Loosen the top screws holding the valve together and pull the handle out. The gasket is either attached to the portion you removed (if it is it will be a whitish-yellow color and it is permanently attached to the diffuser) or it will be in a groove down in the body of the valve (and it will be black). Take the top assembly and/or gasket to a local pool store. They'll have the part(s) and may even install it for you. If they do not install it they can direct you in how to do it. If this is an above ground pool you will need to close off any valves or block the skimmer and return somehow while you repair the filter.

Waste line leaking

The wagon wheel looking spider gasket inside the has bit the dust. Depending on your valve model you may be able to just replace the spider gasket. Some manufacturers don't offer the gasket as a stand alone part and you have to replace the diverter assembly. If you post your valve model, i can send you a link to the proper part.

This gasket usually goes out because someone lifted the handle on the valve while the pump was running. Be sure the pump is always off before pressing down on the handle to change positions.

GASKET CHANGE: What steps should I follow to change a leaking gasket on the diverter on the valve of my DAVEY TAGELUS 230 sand filter?

make sure the valves on the outside of the pool are closed so when you open up the valve to change the gasket the pool water will not continue to run out of the filter.
Once you are secure about water flowing out of the pool through the filter you can remove the bolts holding the filter body together and change the gasket.

My pump is on filter but is draining the water out please help

The water Has to be going out the 'backwash' or 'waste' line.Either that or you have a leak in the plumbing. If the backwash/waste valve is set in the 'filter' position and there is still water escaping through the backwash/waste line, it means that the o-ring or spider gasket needs to be replaced or re-seated. If it is a multi-port valve (one that you spin to select the setting as opposed to a 'push/pull valve) you can try shutting off the pump; do a complete turn, 360 degrees, from the 'filter' setting all the way back to the 'filter' setting. This sometimes helps the spider gasket re-seat

When I move the lever to filter, water runs out of the waste outlet

Depending on the valve... If a push-pull, the o-rings need to be replaced. If a multi-port (six to 8 position valve) the spider (spoke) gasket is pinched or damaged. Sometimes opening the multi port and re-aligning the gasket will solve it. If a push-pull replace the o-rings...About $12.00 in parts for the push-pull...

Water leakes from every setting on a variflow valve

If a new gasket didn't solve your problem then you will need to search for a crack in the plastic either in the gasket seating groove or the diffuser that rides atop the gasket. Whether it is fixable or not will depend on what is cracked. The diffuser can be replaced...the groove can not. A new top-mount valve is about $100.

Water is leaking out my waste line when using recirculate.

Replace the internal "wagon-wheel" looking gasket inside the valve. Its job is to keep the water going thru the valve and ports the handle is set to and not leak out of the waste port.

Water is leaking out of backwash while in normal filter cycle

This is usually a problem with the valve, not the filter. You will need to take the valve apart, look for an O-Ring that has gone bad, usually on the handle (top section) part of the valve. The O-RIng may look like a wagon wheel that is missing a spoke.

Problem with vari-flo multipoer 1.5 and Hayward DE fiilter

You need a rebuild kit for the valve and possible a sand change. Sand should be changed ever 3 - 5 years or so depending on overall pool conditions.

The gasket inside the valve is out of place and therefore allowing water to leak out the waste port. Use a gokit to replace all the gasket/orings and you should stop the leak.

If the flow is still bad, inspect the sand and change it if necessary.

Water coming out of the waste line

Open the valve and you will likely find the gasket, which looks alot like a "wheel" with spokes, is out of place and/or damaged. You may be able to reseat it in to the groove it fits in or you may need to replace it.

Gasket on hayward 712-2 is slightly warped water comes out of backwash at same time filter is running. need new gasket. temp fix of raising the seat of broken spoke not working. filter runs fine if valve...

Buy a new gasket and install with some sort of gasket lube.
Selector (rotary) valve operation: Do not move selector valve unless pump is off, and always move in a clockwise direction.
'Waste' selection bypasses filter completely and sends water directly out of pool backwash port
