Well, I guess your visitors have come and gone, but the vacuum remains the same. It sounds like you have a broken or worn belt. The belt should be changed once a year (approx) and can break if something is picked up that jams the brush. It is also possible that you have something obstructing the vacuum inlet at the brush housing.
If the belt is worn, it can still look o.k., but won't have the tension to turn the roller when it engages the carpet. I suspect the belt is your trouble.

look on the underside where the brush roller is and unplug it first then try to turn the brush roller by hand,if it turns real freely the belt is broke.you might have a clog at your intake hose at the bottom its the clear looking hose that goes from the bottom and comes up the back.if the belt is broke before you put a new one on clean the motor shaft there might be some old belt rubber on it ,otherwise the new belt won't last

Is the suction tubing in the head assembly clogged, is the belt broke? If the if the belt looks good the brush may be turned off and you may need to turn the brush switch on.

Look for a silver motor shaft behind the brush roll but in line with where the belt sits.
If the shaft is blackened with burned rubber or rusty, it should be polished with wet dry sand paper, XTRA Fine. Then install the correct belt onto the shaft and brush, using the brush to stretch the belt forward so the brush can drop into it`s housing. Buy belts 2 at a time. They only break when you need them most. I hide my spare inside the housing.
