Hi, my laptop sound has gone dead in a sudden. When I open the volume mixer, I can still see the green bars jumping up and down on digital output device (SPDIF) but nothing at all for windows media player and all the other parts. I've tried a lot of things but still very confused and don't know what to do. Please help me =(

Hello patrick886,
If your volume mixer is still showing the noise bars moving, that's great. It means the computer knows sound is coming from somewhere, the fact that you can't hear it, indicates there's a problem with where to send that sound (aka your speakers). Now with the no sound coming out, I'm guessing you are talking about the internal speakers and not external ones.
Have you recently installed any kind of music editing software? Mp3 player such as Winamp, iTunes or other music related programs? I'd start by checking the device manager to see if the speakers are at least being detected.
I've put together a nice little picture for you. Hope it helps!!

Low sound but my speaker is 100

Check the sound mixer for a low volume slider. The output may be high but if the microphone/mixer volume is low, the output will be low.

I am having problems adjusting volume

What type of laptop HP , ASUS , COMPAQ , ACER ?..........
Up the Volume on My HP Laptop
Open the "Start" menu and click on the "Control Panel" icon.
Locate and open the icon that deals with sound.
Depending on your version of Windows, it will say either "Sounds and Audio Devices" or "Adjust System Volume."
Adjust the volume under the "Speakers" icon.
To do this, click on the slider bar and move it up on the slider.
If you need to decrease the volume, simply move the slider bar down.
Click on "OK" when finished and close the "Control Panel" window.
Click on the speaker icon in the bottom-right corner of the screen for a faster volume adjustment. Simply move the slider bar up to increase the volume and move it back down to decrease the volume.

Volume on an Acer Laptop
Acer laptops are typically sold with pre-installed Windows operating systems that offer sound-adjustment features for increasing the volume on the laptop's built-in stereo speakers.
These same functions can also be used in tandem with external speakers or headphones to increase the volume, as well as mute all sound on the laptop.
If the computer should output an unusually low volume, fixing the problem may be no more involved than sliding a control switch with the computer mouse. Click once on the speaker icon in the taskbar on the lower-right corner to open a rectangular window with a slide control.
Click and hold the left mouse button on the slide control to drag it upward, increasing the volume to the laptop's maximum setting.
Click the "Mixer" button below the slider control to open another window with volume controls for "Speakers" and "Applications," adjusting each slide control upward to increase the volume.
Be sure the speaker icon below each control is not accidentally muted.
Click once on each speaker icon to remove the red circle with a slash through it, which will restore audio.
Click the Microsoft flag or "Start" button in the lower-left corner if the shortcut speaker icon is missing from the taskbar.
Click "Control Panel" to select "Adjust Sounds" from the Hardware and Sounds category.

No start up music when opening media centre

Hi,
A. As you have stated that "music plays just fine" and you also said that "there is absolutely no sound", so I am a little confused on this issue. Could you clarify whether you get any sound while playing a song/video on Windows Media Center or is it an issue only with the navigation sounds on Windows media Center? B. You may check the Volume mixer settings for the Windows Media Center.
Cross check the settings.
Here is how:
1. Right click on the Speaker icon on the task bar.
2. Click on "Open Volume mixer".
3. In the Windows Media Center mixer drag the slider down till you get the adequate sound.

Headphones not working, microphone is working but quiet

Right click on the volume icon and go to volume mixer. There may be a specific volume option that has been lowered. Alternatively, you can go to playback devices and check the your headset settings there.
