How do I add 8 GB RAM to MY 1 GB RAM Gateway 834GM system?

Sorry but your system will only upgrade to 2 gig of RAM
http://panam.gateway.com/s/PC/R/5293/5293sp3.shtml
but where your current memory is installed there are two locking levers on each socket one on top one on bottom press on those to release the memory and remove the current memory stick, now when installing the new memory make sure the little notch on the memory stick lines up with the one on the memory socket when your sure its correct just firmly press the new memory stick into the socket the two llever locks should lock automatically if not you can do it manually, take care not to put to much pressure on the memory stick. hope this helps

Have viris need to get to system restore to solve problem

Why not just kill the Virus? Use your up-to-date Anti Virus and run a FULL scan, delete ALL results. Use MALWAREBYTES freeware at : http://www.filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/ In the install UNCHECK the TRIAL PRO version, you want the freeware version, run a FULL scan, delete ALL results, reboot. Use freeware CCLEANER: http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/ to remove the junk from your machine, If you are determined to Do a Recovery use this procedure: https://support.gateway.com/emachines/software/MICROSOF/vista/7515910/7515910su4.shtmlhttps://support.gateway.com/emachines/software/MICROSOF/vista/7515910/7515910su4.shtml

Need to load xp on gateway

Do you have a full installation disc or an Upgrade version of XP? The full install should give you an option for partitioning and formatting the new hard drive as part of the installation process. From Microsoft, read this page for details:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/313348 . You may need some additional drivers if you have a SATA hard drive. More screen shots and details are here: http://www.theeldergeek.com/hard_drives_03.htm .

An alternative way of dealing with the problem may be to use a third-party Partition Manager software (Symantec's Partition Magic, Paragon's Partition Manager). Paragon's site is
http://www.partition-manager.com/ . This site has various levels of Partition Management software (with different features available in the more expensive versions). You'll need the bootable CD version of the software (recovery disc, .iso) to do the partitioning.

I hope this helps.

(I thought the upgrade version could also be done to a new hard disc including the partitioning; all you needed was a Win OS disc from an earlier version to prove qualifying ownership.)

Gateway sells the cds. If you tell them your model no they will send you a recovery disc (with a tiny fee of course).

Here's their number 866-539-3901

You can also live chat here http://www.gateway.com/about/contactus/index.php

Also, check this site out might turn out to be helpful.

Hi,If I was to upgrade now to a laptop and request XP Pro (Don't wan't Vista)will I be able to have Windows 7 installed when it comes out ? as It will be a while before 7 is released and I'm keen to get a...

You will be able to get Windows 7, however it will have to be a clean install. That means you'll have to back up all your docs, pics, videos, and whatever to CDs, DVDs, or a thumbdrive/s before you install Windows 7. Also, any software you have on XP will have to be reinstalled, assuming it is compatible with Windows 7. There are no guarantees. Welcome to the world of Microsoft. See more here.

I need to up grade my windows 2000 to windows xp

First you need to make sure that your computer meets the following specifications:
- 300 MHz (or higher processor)
- Intel Pentium/Celeron or AMD K6/Athlon/Duron compatible processor.
- 128 MB of RAM (or higher)
- 1.5 Gigabytes of available hard disk space
- Super VGA (800 x 600) or higher resolution video adapter and monitor.

I am sure that your computer likely meets all of these requirements, but I posted them to save you the grief if by chance it does not meet one of the above!

In a moment I will post a link to a website where you can purchase an upgrade to Microsoft Windows XP home edition (Service Pack 2).

Once you have the software, start up windows 2000 and place the disk into the CDROM drive. You should be given an option to upgrade to XP. (make sure you start the disk while you are on the Windows 2000 desktop with all programs closed). After XP is installed if your computer does not have an Antivirus program installed, I strongly recommend either installing Norton Antivirus or AVG. AVG is free and can be downloaded from http://www.avg.com/. Then make sure that your windows firewall is turned on. (It should be automatically) After this go to Microsoft.com and download service pack 3 and any additional updates needed.

The upgrade version of Windows XP home with service pack 2 can be purchased from newegg.com by clicking on this link: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16837116194.

I hope that this information has been helpful to you. Please let me know if you have any other questions!
