Anonymous Posted on May 28, 2011

I'VE A YAMAHA PSR S700. The problem is with it's screen. Whenever i start playing, the screen fades and then it comes and it goes and vice versa. This occurs almost two - three days a week. There is no sound problem. What should i do?

Likely a connection to the backlight is being broken. Tap on the unoit and see if it pops back on. Illuminate screen with a flashlight and see if the characters can be seen when screen is faded. If they can, then the backlight is the problem... IF NOT then the display may be bad... This has been a problem and if you are under warranty, excersise it immediately... else replacement of the display is relatively expensive.

YES.... THANK U VERY MUCH. IT IS A BACKLIGHT PROBLEM. THE CHARACTERS CAN BE SEEN WHEN A TORCH IS ILLUMINATED ON THE SCREEN.

It may be that the cable powering the backlight has come partially loose and the vibration makes it come and go. When opening the unit, be careful of the ribbon cables connecting between the two halves of the case.

There is no danger of damage with the backlight like this, but it would sure be annoying. Try tapping the unit when it has faded and see if it re-connects... gentle tapping, not with a hammer or fist... do it with a knuckle for instance.

How do you replace a failed LCD backlight lamp on a Yamaha PSR-S700 keyboard? Is this a user or a workshop repair?

The backlight is not shown as a replaceable item only as part of the LCD unit. There is a complication in replacing the screen as the original screen is no longer available and a replacement screen also now involves other modifications beyond the average user I would suggest.

Speak to your local Yamaha dealer for a price on the screen kit

Yamaha psr700 speaker cover removal

Assuming this is a PSR-S700 then you need to undo all the screws under the keyboard and open up so you can see inside under the speaker grill. You will see the grill has tabs that poke through the casing and these are then twisted to keep it in place. Straighten these, push tab through casing going from side to side and then the grill will eventually work free. You do not want to do this too much as the tabs will eventually break with wear.

I have a Yamaha PSR S700 keyboard. Whenever I play it, the OTS settings automatically gets changed and disabling all my other buttons on panel. Only if I select 'No' for the question displayed in...

It sounds like one of the OTS buttons is getting triggered accidentally. There may be a build up of residue behind the button. With the unit off, try rapidly pressing the OTS buttons, one at a time. This should help to move any debris which may be creating a false contact.

If you are feeling brave, you can try opening the keyboard and getting inside, under the button with some electrical contact cleaner such as DeOxit or Servisol. But be warned: it can be difficult to get the parts back together properly! So if you don't have much servicing experience, call your local music shop to find a service technician.

This morning during a church performance, 1/2 of our display went out on my PSR-S500. Is this a user-replacable part? I'm pretty handy with a meter and not afraid to crack the case. This item is not...

It is shop replaceable. I have heard this is NOT an uncommon problem. You can get the parts through Yamaha America in California. Here is your service manual:

Scroll down to "Get Manual" and click on it to download the manual (about 12Mb)

The keyboard is showing sign of power input but the screen is not lighting and produces no sound

1. Try the volume

2. Your adapter may not be the proper voltage/amperage. If the adapter has ratings listed, make sure they match the keyboards ratings.

3. Try it with the headphones. If they work and the speakers don't, you've narrowed down your problem. There may be some damage or wiring problem within where the board meets the speakers, and/or before processing.

4. Try it with batteries. If that works, you need a new adapter.
