Question about Refrigerators

Fridge is very warm on outside at top and is not cooling very well, even at top setting

I have the same problem. When I performed the Control Board Troubleshooting steps for Service Test 2 (Compressor/Condenser Fan Test) there is a noticeable buzz sound for approx 20-30 seconds then nothing. Out of the test mode the refrigerator cycles this sound off and on like it is trying to start the compressor? The black tank in the back is warm, it just feels like nothing is moving or flowing.

Why is my sub zero fridge model 590 warming up?

Hi fridges will warm up on the outside as they remove heat from the inside. excessive heat with not extreme cooling inside the fridge indicates a possible degridation of coolant fluid or a leak. as the motor tries to cool the fridge the thermostat inside stays on as the tempreture inside has not been reached. if you hear the motor/ pump continually running this will indicate a cooling problem.

Freezer works, but has some ice forming and refrigerator not cooling.

The refrigerator half of a refrigerator/freezer does not produce any cold! The refrigerator is cooled by transferring air from the freezer to the fridge. The fridge temperature setting controls a flapper between the freezer and the fridge. There should be a fan which blows air from the freezer into the fridge (through the damper).
If the ice forming in the freezer is concealing the cooling coil and air can not move through the coils, then the overall result will be a warm freezer (even though there may be ice in one location) and a warmer yet fridge. This can be tested by unplugging the fridge and allowing a complete thaw. If the ice is the cause of the problem, then it should work for a short while until it freezes up improperly again
:o).

My refrigerator is warm, but the freezer seems to be fine.

Since frost is seen it is a good indication as the compressor is working with sufficient gas within.
Now after about 6 hours plug in the fridge to start. Observe cooling to happen in about one hour and ice to from under three hours.
Earlier make sure that the thermostat was set to normal mode for freezer and fridge.Since Ice forms then observe the fridge for about 24 hours for cooling to continue and the fridge to cut off . If not the auto defrost timer, or the thermostat must be checked.
If defrost timer works but frost keeps forming check while the compressor shuts if the heaters are working, check continuity of the heaters.
So try this test from the outside and make your observations so that we come to the solution.

The outside of the top freezer of my refrigerator has been getting very, very warm. It remains warm for maybe 30 min., then cools off, and then gets very warm (almost hot) again about an hour later, only...

That is usually caused by the evaporator fan not running. It's located under the fridge accessed from the back behind the cardboard cover. The fan should run when the compressor runs.

Not cooling in hot temps

Double check clearances around fridge, which should be zero on sides and top, as well as check baffle in stack, which should be 1-7/8" above burner. Also check door gaskets with paper (it should drag through when doors closed. Does the burner stay lit when on propane, even though temperature is increasing inside fridge?

Refrigerator top rack is warm. Temperature shows 65 degrees

if your freezer can make ice and the ice is dry, the problem is simply air flow into the refig section. A very common cause for a service call that wasnt needed for reefers is the settings. One setting OFF 1-10 usually, operates the compressor. The remaining setting will say , for colder freezer or similar, It opens a little flapper door between the freezer and the fridge section. If you set that one to max or coldest freezer it will actually starve out the fridge section for air ,and you get a cold freezer and warmer box! It happens everytime someone has the problem , its too warm! they peg both controls to coldest! The compressor will coll the freezer sufficiently even if set to 1 and the fridge should be cool too if the setting isnt pegged to coldest setting thus closing down fridge air and making the freezer colder which isnt ever required!

The outside metal around the freezer area is very warm.

We were informed that because of a lot of power outages and surges that the freezer was in constant defrost mode. Since the freezer had been in constant defrost for at least 5 days, we were told that the condenser would probably short out. Even though the fridge was 7 years new. We decided it would be cheaper in the long run to get a newer more energy efficient one, because we didn't know what other damage had been done and if fixing everything would just be too expensive and it could quit before everything was fixed.
