Hi i think you under stand perfectly about differences between each mode M,Av,Tv, and P. However, would you look more carefully check how they are responding at each mode. I would like to know more what other mode respond, then I could tell what has problem. Thanks and kindly regard!

Overexposing in auto modes, low light being reported.

The Auto modes on the 40D weren't very reliable when I ran comparison tests with other models..and systems. In fact I gave up with the 40D altogether! :) The anti-aliasing filter was a joke and the auto focus was....blaaah.

You mentioned you 'reset everything'? Yet it sounds like there may be some residual settings left behind. EG, white balance settings, flash sync speed. You might also want to check the individual presets for LANDSCAPE, PORTRAIT, NATURAL etc... Once you can start afresh, things should start to make sense as you make adjustments. Just remember to keep account of what adjustments you make.

CF (custom functions): are normally reset to factory however some settings remain (white balance adjustments, tonal adjustments etc)

What setting do I use to take clear pictures of moving hair?

Your problem is that your shutter speed is too low. If your concern is primarily stopping movement (hair or other) you need to increase your shutter speed or use a flash. If you don't wish to use the flash (or it is already too bright), then use the Tv mode on your camera (Shutter Priority) which controls the shutter speed.

The value will vary based on the speed of your object and the amount of light in the scene. I would suggest starting with a value of 1/250 second which will probably be sufficient to freeze most hair movement. Note that as you increase the speed, you need more light.

ISO stays on Auto. I push the ISO button to change the ISO off of Auto and it doesn't do anything on my 40D

The ISO is set to Auto and can't be changed when shooting in Basic Modes (all of the icons and the green circle). ISO can only be adjusted in Creative Modes (P, Av, Tv, A-DEP, M). If you want to adjust the ISO in Creative Mode, press the ISO button and then turn the dial next to the shutter trigger.

I have a canon 40D and a speedlite 580 second sync not working

If you are not in P, AV, TV or M then the camera will not allow that feature. The picture modes disable many higher, more sophistocated features.

My eos40d on sports mode is not shooting at its proper speed at 6.5 frames per second. it shoots 2 frames per second and the piture cones out orange and not focus I only have this camera four weeks any...

6.5fps is only the manufacturer's indicative maximum. The camera will not always perform at this speed when conditions aren't suitable (too dark, for example). In Sports Mode, the camera decides the correct shutter speed for that scene. If it's not a very bright day, shutter speed has to be lowered (slow) to compensate for the lack of light. This results in a lower frame per second.

If you want to test the max fps, set your camera on Tv, and set the speed to 1/1000+ on a bright sunny day. Set the Drive Mode to AI Focus or AI Servo. If at 1/1000th of a sec, the Aperture value blinks in the viewfinder, you don't have enough light. Increase the ISO. You should be able to achieve 6.5fps. That's my experience anyway. Good luck.

Inconsistant exposure in Manual mode

In manual mode the light meter result is the output of setting the apeture and shutter speed. It will constantly change as you change these and the ISO until you get the desired exposure. Is this what you mean by inconsistent? If it is giving verying results in the same conditions try it with ISO 100. That should fix it

Flash exposure does not work in Av and Tv mode

There is nothing wrong here - the camera computes the exposure as the flash is not firing. The flash will fire and it will adapt the power to the received light. You must go into M ot AV, fix your parameters and shoot. The flash will adapt to your whishes - only take care to not choose a shooting time to small (1/200 or 1/60 - you have settings for it).

This is not a bug, but a feature.
