I read about these problems before some people tried downloading and old Dashboard Update for the Xbox 360 Slim and that could work.. If not I think you should take it back to where you bought it and not take it apart because it will void the warranty. I am assuming you are referring to playing original Xbox games on your new 360. Halo was the only game from the box that you can play directly without needing to download the patch to play but supposed newer systems have the capability to play more directly out of the box.
Other backwards compatable games can be played but you will need a samll patch for each game. The game if playable will automatically attepmt to download the patch from xbox live. So you will need to have your Xbox 360 conected to live or have a patch disk. (which is available via the Xbox Magazine disk or can be downloaded online and burned to a disk)
The Xbox 360 released a new dashboard update on May 19, 2011. That might be your problem. Microsoft announced that some consoles were not compatible with the update but if you contact them they can replace you with a new Xbox 360 slim 250GB and a year of Xbox live membership.
You need to connect your xbox to the internet, either with a wireless adapter or with a cord into the wall port. After you are connected, when the xbox turns on, it should ask if you want to install the system update. After that, you will be able to play the game.
