Question about Western Digital My Book Essential 1TB External USB 2.0 Hard Drive

2 Answers

Just got a new WD HD (1Tb) and am trying to put a bunch of movies onto it, but the drive is 'read only.' i can't create new folders on it, or transfer anything onto it either. i'm on OSX at the moment, but my friend has tried it on Windows and had the same problem. Is there any way to make it so that i can write on the drive without running the inbuilt 'WD SmartWare Software,' because that wants to back up my computer onto the drive, and that's not what i'm trying to do..?.

Hi. Try to format the drive, but choose quick format or you will be waiting a long, LONG time.

How was the drive formated? If it was formated as NTFS, OSX can only read - it won't write.

If you're going to be using it on your Mac, then you should repartition/reformat it in your disk utility. That way you will get better performance out of it.

How do i set my screenplay mx2 so i can view categories,ie. Comedy, Action and so on. I do not want to scroll threw 500 titles.thanks

Connect the device through USB to your PC. Create folders with titles according to each genre you want, drop videos in them. Voila.
PS: If you Google "dvd cover <movie title>", and then select "images" category, you can download a DVD cover for your movie as a JPG file. Make sure to give it EXACTLY the same name as the movie title and put it in the same folder with the video file. It will show in the TV menu next time you fire it up.

Can not burn movies to my Hitachi 1tb external hard drive

I copy and paste the movie file just like you would do from one folder to another,it takes a few minutes sometimes but worth it. You can cut and paste but I don't recommend it as if anything goes wrong you could lose the original.

How do I use my WD hard drive to store files so I can free up space on my laptop hard drive?

Hi:
That's an easy task:
1) Plug your Hd to your laptop and wait until the laptop recognize it as a new drive and assign a new letter to it. If you have a disc use it if your laptop ask for it.
2) Copy all files you want to transfer to the new HD and paste them on it.
That's it.

I installed a second WD My Book, after the first one inexplicably filled up too quickly. Now the second one has inexplicably filled up also. What could be causing this?

The most logical reason for this problem to occur is because you're storing too many files in the ROOT of the external hard disk drive (HDD). The Windows file system can only manage a limited number of files (about 500) in the root of ANY drive. It is better to store those files in a FOLDER on the drive; Windows can manage an infinite number of files IF you store them inside a folder. Let's see if we can resolve this step-by-step:

1. Open Windows Explorer and navigate to the external HDD (drive E:, drive F:, drive G:,or whatever letter it has on your system).

2. If the external HDD does NOT have a name (such as "WDMyBook01", or something else easy to remember), RIGHT-CLICK the letter of the external HDD; Windows will give you the option of creating a NAME for the external HDD.

3. Create a name for the external HDD, you can use any combination of letters or numbers, but NOT MORE than 11 characters in length. By creating a distinct name for your external HDD, you'll have an easier time remembering which MyBook drive has certain files on it. Be sure to do this for BOTH external HDDs.

4. Next, create a new folder in the ROOT of the external HDD; give it a simple SHORT name, such as "Folder01" (no quotes).

5. MOVE ALL OF YOUR FILES from the ROOT of the external HDD into the new folder you just created.

6. In the future, put ALL your files into a folder on the external HDD, so you can avoid experiencing this problem again.

7. As you've probably already guessed, it is also a good idea to avoid putting more than 500 files into the root of ANY HDD. SOME files MUST be stored in the root, because that is where Windows expects to see them, but don't add any of YOUR files, the ones you create or download, into the root of the drive.

8. This numerical limit also applies to USB flash drives and other storage devices. You avoid this problem the same way, by creating folders in the root of the drive and storing all files inside a folder.

Good luck with this; let us know if you have any questions.

Have you "emptied" your Recycle Bin?

From the "Start" menu, look in "Accessories".
One of the accessories is a "disk cleanup tool". Run it.
It will also delete all your "Temporary Internet Files" that Internet Explorer has created.

Now that you have "moved" your pictures and movies,
what will you do if your external hard-drive "dies",
taking your _only_ copy of those files to its grave?

It's time to buy a *NEW* "internal" disk-drive, e.g., 400GB for under $100 for a "laptop" disk-drive, reinstall Windows onto it, and copy (not "move") all your files from the external disk-drive to the new disk-drive.

My Book 1Tb will not let me put movies on it

I know exactly what your problem is. You are trying to add a file bigger than 4 GB on a fat32 external hard drive. You simply cant put something that big in there without breaking it into smaller bits. You could easily add a bunch of small files just not huge files bigger than 4GB.
Your solution would be to reformat your WD external drive to a ntfs. That can be done as easy as right clicking your external drive through my computer and highlighting "reformat". Good luck and I hope you dont forget this little thing about computers..sometimes when you get a good deal on pc hardware its for a reason :)
this is good for all hard drives including western digital
