Basically you need to do things methodically and take a note of where each of the components are connected and their electrical connections are attached to so you can place them back in the same location.
First Remove the desktop case
Next you need to remove the various cards that are in the expansion slots.
Next Disconnect the data cables to the hard drive, floppy and CD/DVD drives from the motherboard.
Next Disconnect the power connectors from the motherboard.
Next Disconnect the front panel connectors
Nest Remove the motherboard and base plate
Next Remove the RAM modules from the motherboard. These can be installed on the new motherboard provided they are the correct type for the new motherboard.
Next Remove the motherboard from the base plate.

To install the new motherboard - just reverse the above instructions.

NOTE - When everything has been installed, the computer may not boot up and run.In this case you may need to install Windows again because Windows was configured for the old motherboard and now need to be installed and configured for the new motherboard.

If your friend is not that familiar with computer parts, then it is not advisable for her to change it herself. But if she wants to, she can try this. Here is a video on how to do it:

My HP Pavilion a000 is turning on, but has a black screen. I looked at the possible problems, and sure enough, some of the capacitors were leaking. Problem is, how do I replace these capacitors? Do I...

we are fixya not HP, so.... why ask here? and not HP real>?
OLD DESKTOP?: a000 is not the real model , only part.'
is this PC ,13 years old. ?
not even the word desktop stated once, wow.
my wild guess is it is a DT, due to super easy motherboard viewings. if not , say so please..

no full service tag stated, it has model and full p/n on it.
See my photo at end. (long post) lacking that.
HP made VAST pc with A000 , as part of much larger P/n
tag line 1 ,3 and 5 tells the helper what is REALLY there.
it even tells us if the parts are for USA. are you?

NO OS STATED in your post.
a000 is a very old PC and has the CAP disease, the china clone caps classical failure.. (well known) 1999 to 2003
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capacitor_plague
so many questions, who fix it, why not just buy another newer PC, that has w7 on it already, the one that is not a virus magnet like XP. (or VISTA junk) W7/8/10 years.

you will not replace the caps easy, (takes special tools) {I can}
there are no new motherboards, HP does not sell things this old.
that leaves used, or (omg NOS) motherboards with the same useless China noname caps in it, why go there? avoid this and run from the box. (I would)

the unstated OS , is problematic here, XP will not let you change the mobo, and MS stopped taking calls in XP and VISTA>
so cant force activation that way, why go down this path.?
what I'd do is buy a usde PC with W7 coa sticker on this side
or newer' (COA is the OS license from MS)

for $100 or near, i can find a PC desktop. that is
vastly better that yours.
but if compelled to run bad motherboards same year.
then if I had your service tag , i could in fact point to them sold used, and be a match , exactly, the HP parts surfer lets me do that.(ask)_

first tell what OS is there? of the 14 used.
then post full service tag for 10x batter answers.
in 2006 HP added the new F11 key. started the year 2006
so if PC is that or newer the F11 recovery key works and you dont need any
HP (unstated) OS(unstated) install media (CDs)
see? how that service tag is magical?

what I'd do is get a newer PC. I bet yours is 2003 or older, i do.
here is the best solution for an upgrade.
id never buy any MOBO with those caps onboard. EVER.
here are some great whys to get a better machine
and not go broke.

LEGACY PAIN: my wild guess , is yours is here.?
off the HP legacy page? if use scrap it.

what is your 1,3,5? only this matters, first. and unstated
next is OS, what OS is running any PC from HP runs 6 or more OS
sold new, even linux ,freedos and P/S2 ! and w95 up
tag_service1-1iohaobt0khnrlk3utl25c3h-4-0.jpg tell more and get x10 better responses !
Like do you need mobility?
do you need W10 or 64bit support. (be wise)
do you want the PC to last 10 more years? or 1 week.
what APPS do you run if any, or only use IE6 the virus magnet.
do you use the internet (LOL)
do you need the MS CLOUD.
the list is endless but this is basic.
did you ask friends if they have a used PC they don't want
or would sell for $10?

I have a HP Pavilion Slimline running Windows 7. I had to replace the motherboard with ASUS F2A55 - MLK. Now I get a 'Configuration Error' when I boot-up.

HI,

You cannot just replace the motherboard and then install the same Hard Drive and expect it to work. It CAN work, but you have to prep your Hard Drive before you switch motherboards.

Your Operating System, if already installed on your Hard Drive, is configured/locked to your old motherboard. You would have to run SYSPREP or some other software on your COMPLETE system before switching out your motherboard, to UNBIND all the hardware and drivers already installed in your Operating System. This would make it ready to be installed in a new computer system... which yours is with a motherboard change.

The only option that I am aware of is to completely reinstall your Operating System from scratch... however, if your old motherboard is still functional, you might be able to put your old system back together and then run the appropriate software (search online), which could save you some time.

Would like to replace motherboard on old HP Pavilion 7940 but have no idea what boards will work. This is just for fun would be great if could be an upgrade. Don't want to spend fortune.

the motherboard is the heart or core of the computer. if you change it you will be forced to change it fot the same model (no upgadre exist, well a new computer will be a upgrade).

so if yoy take of the moder board you will be left with the other componenst like; the dvd reader, ram memory, procesor, modem, cables, and whatever you computer had.

so even if yoy manage to get an android motherboard (is a moderboard that is made to put diferent brand of components in it) and put the components that were left of the pavilion, you will get the same performance as your old pavilion.

if you whant to increase the performance of that hp pavillion 7940. look for upgrades for the moder board of that computer. like a better memory module. or a better video card for better graphics. i dont think that the processor can be changed in some models they are fixed to the moder board or the mother board will not support any other kind of processor.

I bought a new HP Pavilion a4313w-b Desktop PC. Plugged all connections in and green light is on and put the CD in and it won't install. Can you give me step by step instructions?

Operative system wont boot?

You need to set your bios to your primary boot device is that cd/dvd rom .

You can also do that by pressing F12 on your keyboard and selecting your CD/DVD drive.

Will new micro atx boards fit inside of a hp 4550z case?

Yes i think you will be ok as i can see and your old motherboard is microatx but i strongly recommend you to change case because is not only about motherboard. You will need and better and new power supply and if you want to build a good system with air flow for not overheating your new cpu and other hardware i strongly recommend you to change and chassis!!You can find a "nice" case with $50-$70 bucks if you dont want to spend money on case, but you will need power supply for sure

HP Pavilion desktop. Installed new RAM, won't power up.

the power supply seems to be fine> but we can check by removing the BIG ATX white connector on the motherboard> if the light is still on then the power supply is fine>>> then
we can first remove all the RAM from the motherboard> then connect the computer to power and then see if the Computer beeps or not> if it does the motherboard is fine > if it doesnt then the motherboard need to be replaced

Hp pavilion 900017' when monitor IS ON , hAS NO IMAGE

Hi,

this will be a graphics Chip/Card problem. or motherboard problem.
Check and reseat CPU. And RAM ( memory )
Also try plugging an external monitor in, and checking to see if there is a display on an external monitor.
refer to the manufacturers user guide, for how to do this.

Thankyou for using Fixya.

When playing DVDs the picture speeds up and flicker a little bit on regular 2-4 seconds basis. I have got a HP laptop.

Girl friend had the same problem Call HP support 18004746836 you may be eligible for a new motherboard. This model has suffered a bad bios overheating the motherboard and causing these problems!! The new bios makes the fan run ALL of the time but many have damage done. They added an extra year warranty for this problem. If its under 2 years old you will most likely get a new motherboard for free!!!
