Question about Western Digital Caviar Black 2TB Internal SATA Desktop (7200 RPM) SATA II Hard Drive

1 Answer

I just added a Western Digital Caviar Black WD2002FAEX 2TB hard drive in my Dell 670 workstation and nothing happens. "My Computer" doesn't show that it even exists. The jumper connections are empty, could this be my problem?

I did go to disk management and all I saw there was my primary drive. I'm really starting to tink I got a bad one! I only have 2 drive busses on the mb and the primary drive is in one of them. This is strange to me because there are 3 hard drive bays.

Thanks for the super quick response rene,

I think I could hear it spinning intermittantly. i don't hear anything now. i never did hear any dreaded clicking sounds either. The drive feels warm after it's on for awhile so i assume it's getting power. I could check the voltages but because the drive is connected to the same wiring harness as the primary drive, I ruled it out as the cause.

If its getting power then putting a drive letter to the drive in windows can be something you should check. Do you know how to do that?
My PC right mouse button manage and then disk management. Tru to find you drive and add the next free character

If you dont see the drive try another bus on the mainboard

    cheers

There are two bays but each holds two drives. One needs to be in slave mode!

I got another one. Same thing! As far as the computer is concerned, the drive is still in its cardboard box!

Upgrade hard drives on 670

There is a 2TB limit with MBR (Master Boot Record), but even a larger drive can be partitioned. So a single 4TB (biggest on the market) drive will look like several drives.
External drives that are bigger than 4TB are really several physical drives combined by an array.

RAID 1 requires optional SCSI drives, cables, and even software?

Add on SATA 3 cards to PCI are not a good idea if you are looking for speed. They just bottlenecks the throughput.

My hard drive is making a strange noise when it is used. It sounds like a heartbeat and it occurs in a random time interval. I know it isnot much to start with but i cannot say anything else about it then...

Hi,
Any strange noise like excessive clicking, grinding, some weird sounds etc. actually indicate a failing hard drive.
Failing hard drives often show warning signs of their imminent demise. If you're lucky enough to see or hear one of these signs, stop what you're doing and immediately back up your data. They say prevention is better than cure so if your computer's hard disk is making some strange clicking sounds, BACK UP YOUR DATA IMMEDIATELY (As the drive is not operating smooth and may fail anytime).
After making backup of your important data on CD/DVD or External Drive, you may scan the drive for surface errors, format it and see if it works properly or not. It would be better if you seek professional assistance for examination of the disk.

Hard drives are mostly under warranty for at least one year. Claim warranty, if possible.
Hope it helps! Good Luck! Thanks for using Fixya!

I have a dell dimension 8300 about 7 years old and it is making noise that I'm thinking may be the hard drive (maxtor7Y250mo). I'm no computer guy, so I'm trying to determine what to replace it with I was...

I prefer the Caviar Black, but most of all am very supportive of your going with Western Digital. They have the best and most generous support to direct consumers of all the HD manufacturers. I've received several replacement drives for ones that failed under warranty over the years for customers without a hitch. There warranty site is easy and quick to use and they are lightning fast at getting your drive to you.

It will be easier if you will have it checked with any computer technician. They will normally charge a very minimal fee for this very common kind of problem.

Be sure to be there when he checked your computer, so he can also teach you about it.

Windows XP does not have built in SATA drivers. You will need to download the XP drivers from Western Digital's website and install before the computer will allow you to format and use your new drive. Hope this helps.
