Question about Nikon Coolscan IV ED Film Scanner

1 Answer

I have a Nikon Coolscan IV scanner that I purchased 4 years ago. It worked well on my old computer, but when I tried to get it to work on my Dell Laptop, I can't get it to operate. I downloaded the Scan 3 CD and the other CD that came with it. I get the message that I need a update and need to download it with the use of Acobat 8, which I don't have. Is there a CD I can buy with the update on it ?????

What OS does your new laptop have? In this case, the version matters. Do you have the 32-bit or 64-bit version of the OS? (I assume you have Windows with a Dell, then click Start > Control Panel > System and Security > System to get the OS and version. A 64- bit OS will have an x64 after the version.)

Nikon does not support the 64-bit OS's.

The files below are for the USB or parallel port Nikon Scanners.

If you have Windows 98SE - XP, download the driver from http://support.nikonusa.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/16452 . Scroll down to the I Agree button. Then download the update to version 4.02 from here: http://support.nikonusa.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/16453 . Install the files in order. (Download and run; double click on the file in the Download manager or on the desktop (or folder where the program was saved).)

If you have Windows Vista, download the software from http://support.nikonusa.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/14463 . Again scroll to the I Agree button. You will need to accept the changes to the computer when the UAC pops up (or under).

See below for Windows 7.

Most manuals are available in a PDF format. To get the latest version of Adobe Reader, go to http://www.adobe.com . Click on the link to download Adobe Reader. (It's on the right hand side of the page below the Special sales offers. Alternatively, go to http://www.adobe.com/go/EN_US-H-GET-READER (in the US). The current version is Adobe Reader X (10.0.1). There is a download and install option. You may need to give an ActiveX permission to start the download with IE. With Vista or Windows 7, you will need to accept the installation making changes to your hard drive (possibly twice) in the UAC.

If you have Windows 7 32-bit, the Vista file may work on your computer. You need to use the compatibility mode. After downloading the file, right click on the installer. Then choose Properties and then the Compatibility tab. Turn on Run program as Compatible with the appropriate OS. Then right click again on the installer and choose Run as Administrator. Then check if the program itself is running in the compatibility mode by right clicking again and choosing Properties. However, Nikon says they do not support any version of Windows 7 even in the compatibility mode. If it doesn't work, see the 64-bit workaround below.

If you have a 64-bit OS, you need to use a workaround. This means you use a computer (virtual, dual-boot, or true second machine) with an older version of Windows installed. If you have Win7 Pro or Ultimate, you can create a virtual XP computer for free. Download and install Virtual PC and XP mode from Microsoft. Install them in order. Then install the XP software from the above site in the virtual computer and it will work. (Other virtual computer programs are Parallels and VMWare.) All of the other options will require a licensed version of the older Windows OS. Please note that the virtual computer can't share files directly with the main computer. You'll need to save files to external or removable media (optical media or flash drive, for example) to share them. Additionally your printer can only be installed on the real or the virtual computer at any given time. You will be asked to uninstall if you try to install it to the virtual computer when it is installed on the real machine.

I hope this helps.

Your OS is Windows XP Home 32-bit. This makes your installation of scanner to your new Dell computer simple. Download the driver fromhttp://support.nikonusa.com/app/answers/... . Scroll down to the I Agree button. Then download the update to version 4.02 from here:http://support.nikonusa.com/app/answers/... . Install the files in order. (Download and run; double click on the file in the Download manager or on the desktop (or folder where the program was saved).)
(This is my first solution; so follow the links there. I can't add working links easily in a comment.)

    I hope this helps.

Were you able to download a current version of Adobe Reader to access the PDFs that you already had? Since your Dell has Windows XP Home (32-bit) with Service Pack 3, you should have no problems. Go tohttp://adobe.com/ to access the Reader download (find the Reader button on the right) or installing the Nixon Scan software fromhttp://support.nikonusa.com/app/answers/... followed by the update fromhttp://support.nikonusa.com/app/answers/... (to version 4.0.2).

Please let me know if you need additional help.

Hi! My computer (Macbook pro) doesn't seem to recognize my Nikon Coolscan IV software and I get the following message

You've not said what the message is but I suspect that the software is too old to be used on the macbook if it is running OS X 10.7 (Lion) or if you are running snow leopard, it may be a non-intel version of the software. It may be asking you to instal rosetta which would be on your snow leopard instal disk.

If the Nikon website does not have updated software you could try vuescan which according to this page http://www.hamrick.com/vuescan/nikon_coolscan_iv_ed.html does work with the film scanner and you can download a demo version which you can trial before you buy. Hope this helps.

Nikon Coolscan IV ED Jam Solution Do you find your older slides, cardboard...

Nikon Coolscan IV ED Jam Solution

926fb88.jpg

Do you find your older slides, cardboard slides, or irregular slides jam in the Nikon SF-210 Slide Feeder for your Nikon CoolScan IV ED?

Try this solution:

Take a AAA battery and place it in rear, left side of the slide feeding tray as pictured below:

4f7ce74.jpg

The slides will fan out nicely, and your Nikon CoolScan IV ED will no longer try to load more than one at a time. Instead it will load them one at a time, 50 per tray, and you can actually walk away from it and let it do its job, just the way you intended to when you bought the SF-210 slide feeder attachment!

I hope that helps.

Installation

I had the same problem with my Coolscan IV. The problem ended up being the scanner, which had several broken pieces in it when it arrived. Since the Nikon repair facility in Las Angles wanted $200 plus parts to look at it and repair it, I subsequently purchased a Coolscan V and went to the Nikon site and downloaded their latest drivers (ns403en_vista.exe) - which worked (works) fine and does a beautiful job. If you follow this route, make sure that you download the correct version, i.e., the Vista version. I have been able to make the scanner work well using both the XP and the Vista Nikon drivers, since I have both an older XP desktop and a new Vista Laptop. Good Luck.

Well, I finally discovered the solution to my problem of not being able to scan...the scanner had several broken parts inside including pieces of plastic wheels and such as well as a spring jammed in the upper slide rail. So, it was not able to re-set or move into the proper position to begin a scan. I called the Nikon repair facility in Las Angles and they wanted $200 to check it out plus parts to fix it. So, instead, I purchased a Coolscan V and it works great! I still have the broken Coolscan IV and may try and have it fixed someday.
