My Ryobi x430 power head will not start. If I spray starting fluid in the carb it starts and runs for a few seconds. The primer pump seems to work because bulb fills with fuel. What next?

If it still under the 3 year ryobi warranty let those knuckleheads deal with it. my x430 bent a valve after 7 uses but in fairness home depot exchanged it for a new 1 after the 30 day store warranty. hopefully this 1 will be better. otherwise if it runs on starting fluid it is probably a carbureutor problem. if you are not real technical then just purchase and install a new carb. they are cheaper than you think and usually remedy 90% of poor running or starting probs. install should b straight forward by looking at the old carb removal. cheapest place around to buy is jacks small engines in jarrettsville maryland. they have an internet site and stock about everything. hope this helps

Theres a pac man tool that you can buy to adjust the carb. That and a little seafoam for cleaning in the tank will fix your problem.

Why won't it start?

Use carburetor spray from now on, starter fluid does damage.

This may need an adjustment on the carb.

If you pull too manyoung times, it could be flooded.

Wait a little, now remove the exhaust, spray carb cleaner into the exhaust port and plug hole... give 2 slow pulls, just enough to make the cyclinder go up and down a few times, then give a normal pull...

Now if it starts and runs a few seconds, an adjustment is needed on the carb.

Runs on starting fluid, not fuel. cleaned carb with carb cleaner(aerosol) ,still won't run. Primer (purge) bulb doesn't work properly. Spark plug dry, fuel lines clean. Diaphram problem or something...

Try spraying a little gas where you spray starter fluid. If it runs you may have to install diaphram kit. If it has a choke can get around primer not working.

My ryobi trimmer want hit a lick. The spark plug is firing. But will not hit. I tried a small spray of starter fluid in the carb and still nothing. Could this be the fly wheel is out of time ?

Try removing the air filter...hold throttle open and either squirt or pour about a teaspoon of FRESH fuel mixture into the carb sure that the fuel enters the cylinder through the throat....hold the throttle open and pull start handle and if you have spark it should start and run for a few seconds...if not you may have an electrical problem (weak magneto = weak spark ) ... if it starts and runs your problem may be in the carb (clean or rebuild) DO NOT use starter fluid to do this is too volatile and you may blow the head right off your machine...also check the four screws on the rear cover (the four screws above the gas tank) they may have loosened and are allowing an air leak at the rear of the crankcase. these covers are plastic and have a tendency to warp under the heat generated by the engine. There is a gasket between the cover and the metal crankcase, and if the cover is warped it may be letting air through into the case....can cause a no start situation. do a cursory inspection of your fuel lines , fuel filter, and the primer bulb and check tightness of the carb bolts as cracks here also allow air leaks in the fuel system. If you've been using starting fluid to try and start your engine you might also want to check the head gasket and front crank seal to make sure you haven't blown a hole in them...good luck...;-D

Ryobi 31cc , 17inch weed ,hard to start ,needs to stay choked to

I got on here to find the solution for the same problem. This seems to be fairly common. I need to have it at 3/4 choke to run properly. Other posts say the exact same thing, about the 3/4 choke. It is apparenly something that breaks occationally.

I'm going to remove the carb and take it apart. My suspection is the diaphram in the bottom of the carb. There isn't much you can do with the carb, it is very simple and has few parts.

There is a chance that it is a blocked passageway also.

There are instructions for adjusting the mixture, but they are not clear enough. I will be posting a clarification reqest on one of those posts. Will also post again after I check the diaphram.

Ryobi 31cc lawn trimmer carb adjustment

As with all 2 strokes if you have compression and a reasonable spark, you only need fresh fuel with correct oil ratio) and they must go !(as long as you haven't fiddled first and all gaskets are sealing) I start mine by(1) pumping the primer till it is firm,(2) full choke,(3) pull till it kicks ONCE,(4) half choke, pull till it runs, allow to warm up and(5) switch to run (you may need to apply a bit of throttle while pulling as in (4)(or give it a few more pumps if it dies) If all is ok, check that when properly warmed up there is a smooth transition from idle to full revs, if it hesitates it may need the LOW SPEED mixture leaning (clockwise) SLIGHTLY.If it dies the LOW SPEED mixture may need richening(anti-clockwise)(adjust 1/8 turn at a time) Make sure that motor is just peaking at full revs and is on the RICH side of peaking (HIGH SPEED mixture)(this will avoid seizing it Adjust both till it revs cleanly and is JUST rich at full, and idleing nicely and it should start without too much trouble.(If you have fiddled and are lost,-about 2 1/2 turns out from closed on both needles should get you started)
