Question about UPM Programmable Outdoor Timer

1 Answer

The instructions are not very clear on my new UPM ET420C Electronic Outdoor Timer. What I want to do is have the time turn on power everyt morning at 3am, run for 2 hours, and stop at 5am. Could you tell me what to do? Thanks. Dave Lyons

How to programme UPM Model ETl30

More information is needed to find manual.
ET130 timer appears to have 6 buttons with 3 buttons on each row.

Review options below:

1) Add a comment and describe timer buttons in detail so I can match buttons with known timers.

2) Open following links and check if manuals for ET525, ET420C, ET420 might have same button and programming relationship.

How do you set upm model dt 420 electronic timer

Open UPM DT420 manual on following link:
http://waterheatertimer.org/UPM-timers-and-manuals.html#DT420

The manual is longer than allowed for free answer and has important illustrations and options.
Please read the manual in addition to instructions given below.

Copied directly from the manual:
1) Select AUTO using the slide switch
2) Select the desired On-period (2, 4, 6, 8, 10 hours) using the dial switch
3) For continuous Dusk to Dawn operation, Select CONTINUOUS using the dial switch.
Timer turns ON automatically at dusk and turns off according to how you set 1 2 and 3.
If timer does not operate, or if it turns on at odd times, then it is broken.

Note: UPM manuals normally leave out important information, but this particular instruction matches closely with similar products and is probably accurate.

I have the ET420C that I want to run about 2 hours per day to chlorinate my spa. I cannot figure out anything from reading that manual. How do I set it up to run every day for about 2 hours?

ET420C manual is longer than space allowed for free answer.
Moreover, this manual leaves off key steps and is totally unclear, just as you discovered.
http://waterheatertimer.org/pdf/ET420C-Manual.pdf
On-line manual has page numbers, but pages are not in order, so look carefully at page numbers.
http://waterheatertimer.org/UPM-timers-and-manuals.html#ET420C

1) Let me work alongside you while we look go through manual.

2) This timer is simple electronic clock, like alarm clock.
Look at page 3 of manual about setting the clock. (Remember to look carefully at page numbers)
Clock needs to know what time it is at your house right now.
Manual shows 10 steps for setting current time.
You use arrow keys to set clock.

3) Next look at page 4 "program settings"
Use arrow keys to select program number
Program number 1 thru 20 appear on display

In my opinion, it appears that program1 is ON, and program2 is OFF
So program1 will be when you want chlorinator to turn ON
Program2 will be when you want clorinator to turn OFF
The manual is missing this key detail, so look at display to see if it shows program1 ON and program1 OFF ... if the ON and OFF do not display, then timer sets as described above.
Make sure you set same days for ON and OFF times >> if programs have conflicts, then timer will not operate as expected.

How to set programs:
Use arrow keys to select program1 and then press SET
Use arrow keys to select day, and then SET, and then arrow keys to select hour, and then SET, and then arrow keys to select minutes, and then SET.
Repeat steps for program2.

4) Mode appears on page 7 of manual
Again the manual is totally unclear how to set MODE or what buttons are pushed
I have the opinion that you do not set MODE unless you use Countdown or Random feature.
So see if timer operates without setting MODE

5) Add a comment if you get stuck, and I will review manual with you while you push the buttons.
You can add as many comments as needed, and I will respond as needed.

6) For heavy-duty outdoor timer with fewer functions, that is easier to program:

Your excellent description of the buttons sounds like UPM EC420 or 420C
Link below has drawings of timer, and links to manual

Instruction manual is too many characters long to fit allowed space for fixya answers, so if you need help with particular part of manual, add a comment and I will give additional free help.

Need a (FREE) manual for a Garrison ADR Timer, model#ET420C; everyone (manual) I saw so far, want to charge for the manual.

That explains why UPM stopped posting their manuals.
I'm surprised nobody has copyrighted manuals so nobody can post a manual without royalty payment to copyright owner. Something to look forward to.

If the UPM ET420C shown on link above IS your timer, and the manual matches, then add a comment so other fixya customers benefit.

If you do not like the free service provided above, then take advantage of fixya phone support.
Expert will download the manual and then read the steps to you for a price.

-Timer can be programmed for ON and OFF times, for Dawn-Dusk, for Countdown, for Daylight countdown, for daylight saving, and for Random. Each different programming option has 8-12 steps shown in manual.
