Question about Computers & Internet

I have a dell Dimension 5150 with an onboard graphics card and i would like to set it up with a duel vga monitor. Can you suggest a graphics card that will be compatable? I tried using a NVIDIA GeForce 6200, but that seems incompatable. There are 2 types of slots on this mother board, one is black and has a locking device on the rear of it and the other 2 are white pci's, I think. I tried the NVIDIA card in the PCI slots but the machine would not boot to windows. Thank you

I have tried 3 on-line stores to purchase a GEForce 8300 GS, but that product does not exist, could a GEForce 8400 GS be used with this motherboard?

Hi,

Welcome to Fixya. if you want to use a dual monitor you can use a Nvidia Geforce 8300GS. You need to connect the video card to the balck slock with lock (PCI-E x16).

To hook up dual headed monitors to the nVidia GeForce 8300GS Video Card you can either:

A. Attach one monitor with the VGA connector, then one monitor with the DVI (I or D) connector.

or

B. Attach one monitor with the VGA connector, then second VGA monitor to the DVI connector, with a simple DVI to VGA connector, these cost like $2-$3 online or in any electronics or computer store.

or

C. Obtain a DVI-I or D to 2-VGA splitter cable. Attach this cable to the DVI connector on the Video Card, then connect your VGA monitors to the splitter cable. Your computer mfg might sell this. Dell have one with a part number of 310-4469. It is almost impossible to find on the Dell site unless you know what you are looking for. Remember there are 5 types of DVI connectors, and the one that is compatible with this card is DVI-I or DVI-D for the male connector portion.

THE KEY TO THE WHOLE THING IS: After attaching monitors, goto Display Properties under Control Panels (Windows), and click on the Settings TAB. Then, select Display: 2. Plug and Play Monitor on NVIDIA GEForce 8300 GS, and CLICK SELECT the box for Extend my Windows desktop onto this monitor. Further you can click Advanced to see the NVIDIA Control Panel for further Dual Monitor setup choices.
If you have questions please let me know. Thanks for using Fixya.

I have a Dell Dimension 2400 desktop. It needs a monitor. I tried new ones from Best Buy and Office Max but they say no signal when I hook them up..I tried this computer with monitor in the following

Thank you for replying,
As per the diagnostic LED's, it is an issue with Video initialization failure. Your computer has onboard Graphics which is built into the Motherboard.
Video Initialization failure could happen if there is :
Unseated AGP card
Bad AGP card
Bad motherboard

As per your Svc Tag your system doesn't have AGP Graphics Card, Probable issue with MOBO.
This computer doesn't have a AGP Slot (Graphics Card Slot) to try connecting Graphics Card.
Need to repair/replace MOBO.

Thanks.

Computer restarts everytime i connect monitor to it

It sounds like the onboard video is failing. The computer should have a PCI Express x16 slot. You can get a basic graphics card to install into the machine for about $35 locally.

Try manual cleaning the graphics card and the RAM by removing from the slot and rub the pins with pencil eraser as shown in the images.

And re-attach them to the motherboard, also clean the graphics card's fan with small paint brush. Works for me, hope same goes with you.
