Change the priority booting option. You can set this to as follows:

What is the boot order? When the computer starts, the system BIOS begins to check a pre-determined list of drives and devices that may contain an operating system such as Windows. The computer can boot an operating system from a hard drive, floppy drive, CD or DVD optical drive, USB storage device, or a network. The order in which the devices are checked is configurable through the BIOS setup menu. What is the default boot order? The default boot order settings for the computer are configured in the factory. The default boot order for HP notebook PCs is listed below.

  1. Floppy disk drive
  2. Optical drive (DVD, CD-ROM)
  3. Hard drive
  4. USB device
  5. Network adapter

NOTE: An operating system not found error message may appear if a floppy disk or an optical disk is inserted into a computer that does not contain an operating system. If this error occurs, remove the disk and restart the computer. If you have installed a second hard drive and the computer does not boot, please select the hard drive which contains the operating system as first boot device in the hard drive group. Back to topConfiguring the boot order The boot order can be configured on the Advanced tab in the BIOS settings menu. The steps for modifying the boot order may vary depending on the model of the computer.
NOTE: BIOS configurations vary depending on the computer. For further information on a specific computer, refer to the documentation provided with the computer or go to the HP Drivers and Downloads page . The BIOS settings are generally listed in the Maintenance and Service Guide. Follow the steps below to configure the boot order on most computers.
  1. Turn on or restart the computer.
  2. While the display is blank, press the f10 key to enter the BIOS settings menu.
NOTE: The BIOS settings menu is accessible by pressing the f2 or the f6 key on some computers.
  3. Select the Advanced tab using the right and left arrow keys.
  4. Use the up and down arrow keys to select Boot Order .
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions to change the boot order.

How to get driver for cd dvd unit

The optical disc drivers are part of the OS. The available drivers and software for Windows Vista, the original OS for the DV6748us are here: . Select your version and click Next.

Windows XP and the subsequent versions of Windows all had the drivers for internal optical drives and most external drives in the Plug and Play control. You may need to go to the Device Manager and check the device status then manually update the driver. (For Vista, click Start > Control Panel (in the right hand column, then under Hardware look for the Device Manager link.) Expand the section for optical drives and look for a triangle with a red x or a yellow exclamation point. Right click on the device and click on the Update Driver button. If that doesn't work, try uninstalling the driver then shut down the computer. Check if Windows loads the driver correctly when you reboot. If you continue to have problems, the drive or cables might be bad. Consider getting a new optical drive (slim if you want to stay with an internal drive).

I hope this helps.

Cant access BIOS to reset it

turn the unit off completely
then turn it on as normal and press the delete button ( hold down) to activate the bios screen
go to the boot tab and enter on it ( keyboard will not click on but the arrows will work)
you will see a list of boot options in a drop down box
make usb no one , enter then esc
you can at the same time arrange the booting sequence as 1,2,3,4 etc

I have a HP DV2000 Laptop. The DVD Drive of Laptop is not working. When I tried to boot from External DVD Drive it wont work, while it shown in booting also checked in BIOS but still not worked.

You can only boot from External DVD if the BIOS has Boot from USB selected as the first option and you have a bootable CD/DVD for example a Recovery DVD.

I am assuming your hard drive is not working.

Booting with External DVD for Dell Inspiron 1525

Power on your system, Press F2 on Dell logo. This would take you to system BIOS. Ensure that USB controller is ON, and USB emulation is also set to ON. Save settings and Exit. System would reboot now. Press F12 on Dell logo, and select USB ROM as the boot device. This should boot your computer through your External drive. If it still doesnt work, try switching to a different USB port. If none of these steps work, it may be a problem with the boot sector on your External drive.

Good Luck!

Usb dvd writer can install xp?

Yes you can use a usb external cd/dvd-rom to any operating system as long as the bios allows you to, most bios's have the capability.

When the external usb drive has been connected power up the mechine, in post it should tell what to press to enter your boot menu without entering your bios and choose usb drive to boot.

Usb cd boot

you need to set the boot device priority in the BIOS in such a way that the computer will take an external CD/DVD-drive as first boot device. to do this, you need to enable USB legacy support first, save and exit from the BIOS settings and then return to the BIOS to set the USB-CD/DVD-drive as primary boot device.
