The stalling issue could be one of many problems. The neutral issue tells me that the clutch/brake adjustment is out and so is the neutral adjustment. Your owner's manual has instructions on the brake adjustment and the shift lever adjustment. For your stalling, and for your convenience, go to auto parts store and purchase a can of Chem Tool Berryman B-12 carb/fuel system cleaner. The usage rate is 1 ounce per gallon. Use 2 ounces/gallon in your fuel can and allow it to go thru the fuel system of the tractor awhile. It WILL clean the carburetor and probably the intake valve(s) as well. I always recommend that a user install an online fuel filter if you don't already have one. If you need more detailed repair instructions or a manual, post back. We will see your comment and reply.

Sounds like the transmission is not going into neutral. there is an internal neutral safety switch on most of these mowers. If it isn't fully engaging in the neutral position, then that will not allow the engine to be started.
do you have a make and model of this power mower?

This is a great point and one overlooked by many with starting problems. One safety switch is in the seat on most tractors, one is in the clutch/brake mechanism and some even have a third one involving the blades PTO.

If the tractor is stalling in high grass, it's possible that the mower deck is set too low for the grass height. You may need to make a couple of passes at it.

Inside the transmission gearbox (on some) there is a switch that will be engaged when the gear selector is in a specific position. I would make absolute sure that the gear box is really in neutral.

    absolutely correct.
I fear tho that the problem is more gear related. especially if it won't go fully into neutral.

I know there have been a lot of mechanical failures and issues with the Dana transaxles on many units, the factory lube dries out, water entering the unit...none of which are good.

Tucomse moer 5.5 Won't speed up when cutting tall grass.

These push-mowers have a limited power, when you hit tall grass there is much more resistance on the blades. Even higher power riding mowers can stall on tall grass.

Grass is too thick & tall and may require a second pass until next time when it'll be easier to cut, or... blades are dull & need resharpening, or... tractor speed too high for the length of the grass.

Went out to cut grass and the blades will not engage and when I put it in gear it does not move. Belts are intact. I cleaned the deck of dirt and grass. Still nothing. Just replaced the cable to engage the blades last year. Cable seems to be working.

Engine stalls when blade is engaged

the best way to check is to run the engine with you on it then lift off the seat and see if the seat sensor is cutting off then put a bag with some weight in it and turn on the engine it should run ok if the sensor is working and lift the back box to see if the sensor works there.. the other cause could be a build up of grass in teh cutter area stopping the blades fron moving this can caus a stall if you get a hose and blast under the cutter guards and make shure the grass shute is clear for the grass to exit this may help to mine cuts out if there is a blockage here and the grass cant get out after it has been cut it builds up at the exit plates.. Hope this works AB

Kubota t1670 stalls when grass cutting

Is the tractor running fine until you engage the blades? Are you cutting tall grass? There are a couple of reason why it stalls. First, while the engine is OFF, you need to see if the blades move freely, you need to lay down beside the deck and reach up (with a glove on, so you won't cut yourself) and see just what is up under there. Remove any debris, I.E. old grass clippings, and anything else.(see if there is anything wrapped around the column where the blades meet the rest of the deck) Then you will have to grab one of the blades and see if it moves freely. Wiggle it back and forth and find out if all 3 move freely. Sometimes a bearing will go bad in one of the blade mounts and cause the engine to stall. Sometimes the electric clutch goes bad and then you have a whole new set of problems. Either way let me know what is going on. Please rate my answer.

Is this the first time cutting grass with a lawn tractor?
How tall of grass?
Use the grass cutting heigth adjustments on the tractor to a higher setting when cutting tall grass. Cut again to a lower height setting on the second pass. Grass higher than your tractor is not good for your tractor. Follow the manual instructions for best results.

Lots of smoke when I engaged stuck blades - now runs roughly

Most likely what you did was burn one or more spots on the belt. When the blades and belt stop turning, like in tall grass, the engine doesn't stop and will burn flat spots on the belt at the engine pulley. Every time the flat spot hits a pulley, it will jump and can set up a bad vibration. Run your hand around the sides of the belt or take it off and you will feel or see the thin spot(s) on it. Replace belt.
