Reseting the router does not fix firware issues it is a problem with the firmware itself. If it got intoerrupted then you could run into this error and you need to reinstall the firmware. I have a dlink router and they seem to have a problem with some of the firmware distros they deliver. One thing that you can try to do is revert back to an older version that they have if reinstalling the firmware didnt work. If this then does not work then you need to contact dlink.

There is a possibility that the firmware upgrade was interupted, please try to press the reset button on the device for around 20-30 seconds, after this and you still have issues, please try to contact D-Link and check the warranty status of the device.

What to do when security light is orange?

Reboot
  • The most basic way to attempt to fix a router problem is to reboot the device. This is accomplished by unplugging the powericon1.png cord, waiting for a minute and then plugging the power connector back in. If the orange light continues to blink, you will have to update its firmware.
Download New Firmware
  • Even though the wireless router is malfunctioning, downloading new firmware is possible by disconnecting the malfunctioning Linksys device from the Internet connection in the wall, then using that jack to plug your machine directly to the Internet. If this is not possible, use another computericon1.png that can connect to the Internet. You can download a firmware update directly from Linksys (see Resources).
Install New Firmware
  • Once you have the firmware update available on the computer affected by the malfunctioning router, open the file and follow the instructions to upgrade the devices firmware.

I contacted c/s for netgear products, I have aWGR 614 v10 wireless router, they recommended I download a driver for it. I went to www.support.netgear.com, attempted to download a deiver, and was not...

I am going to assume you were advised to download a firmware update and not a driver, as in 99% of user installations of a router drivers are not necessary. Below you will find the instruction for uploading the firmware to your router, as well as the links associated with the firmware. You need to access the router through a browser, such as Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, etc. The reason you cannot find the file association is because this is a checksum file with a chk extension and there is no program that can run this in a computer environment, as it is a language file, compiled for installation through hardware. I hope this helps explain what is going wrong and how you can correct this issue. Let me know if you require additional information on setting up your router.
  1. Download the file to a convenient place such as your desktop.

    For North America users only

For users outside Americas - World wide Version

    right-click-and-save-downlo.gif 1.84 MB

    For users in Russia only

    right-click-and-save-downlo.gif 1.84 MB
Note: Do not upgrade the firmware using a wireless connection. Please perform firmware upgrade with "wired" or Ethernet connection only.

  2. Open a Web browser.
  3. Access the router (http://192.168.1.1 or the Default Gateway address if the router's default IP was changed).
  4. Log in the router (User Name = admin and Password = password, unless you changed it).
  5. Write down all settings that you entered when previously configuring. This includes information such as ISP configuration and wireless security settings.
  6. Under Maintenance, click Router Upgrade.
  7. Click Browse and locate the firmware upgrade file.
  8. Click Upload.
  9. Wait for the router to reboot.
  10. Under Maintenance, click Settings Backup, then click Erase. (Or press the reset button on the back for 10 seconds.)
  11. Wait one minute for the router to reboot.
  12. Manually enter the configuration information you wrote down in Step 5.

Hi i am losing wiresless connection frequently every ten minutes how do i fix this

There are three things that could be wrong that result in losing connection

1. Firmware fault
2. ISP fault
3. network card fault

the most probable is firmware fault
you should upgrade to latest firmware
links, if you have version 1 http://downloads.linksysbycisco.com/downloads/firmware/WRT160N_1.02.2_US_code.bin
if you have version 2 http://downloads.linksysbycisco.com/downloads/firmware/WRT160Nv2_v2.0.03.007_US_code.bin
if you have version 3 http://downloads.linksysbycisco.com/downloads/WRT160Nv3_3_0_02_003.bin

Just go to http://192.168.1.1/
if it asks for user name and password
put
user name = admin
password = admin

click on the Administration tab. The firmware upgrade function is somewhere on a subtab. You'll see a browse button with which you select the firmware file you downloaded before. Once you press the Upgrade button (please only do it if you really want to upgrade the firmware!) the browser sends the selected firmware file to the router where it will be installed after the router reboots itself.

if its an ISP prob there is nothing you can do to fix it except call the ISP and ask them to fix it

If its network card problem i highly advise to buy a new one

Netgear DG836GT

OK. First, that dg836gt_1_02_09.img file does not seem to be a firmware file. You need to get a .zip file or a .bin file to upgrade the firmware. Check Netgear's website for the current firmware. If it is a .zip file, then you need to extract the .bin file from the .zip file with winzip software. Then, log into your router with Internet Explorer by typing it the routers IP address in the address bar like this http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx. Enter user name and password. Look for a tab that states software update. Browse for the .bin file you downloaded or extracted from the .zip and click update.

Firmware update for netgear router

I was having the same issues too. I followed the steps dotted all over the internet and was getting stuck in exactly the same place. No matter how hard I tried, I just kept getting the 'invalid filename' issue.

Eventually I figured it out - the way that Netgear/Virgin have blocked firmware updating is to break the filename checking page so it doesn't accept any files. What we need to do is bypass the filename checking code so that the firmware upgrade system can then handle the file, and we're going to do this by manipulating the web page using a tool called Firebug.

Here is the solution:

1) If you haven't already got it, install Mozilla Firefox 3 (there is good reason for this - I'm not just shamelessly plugging it! :P).
2) Install the 'Firebug' extension for Firefox from https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1843 and restart your browser when requested.
3) Navigate to your router's admin page, and fill in your login details (if you don't know them, it's likely to be the one written on the bottom of your router).
4) Navigate to the router upgrade page (the one where you select the firmware to upload' and select the location of the firmware file, like you would normally. Now, instead of clicking the 'Upload' button, press F12. This should bring up Firebug in the bottom quarter of your screen.
5) Now, click the moz-screenshot.png2193448.jpgbutton at the top of the Firebug panel and then click on the 'Upload' button. This will bring up the code for the upload button, where it does the filename checking. It'll look like this:
b5b0399.jpg

6) It looks like Netgear have actually stripped out the real checking code so it can't be used, so we'll need to fool the page into thinking everything's fine and dandy with the filename so it can update the firmware. Click where it says "return checkData();" and replace it with "return true;".

7) Finally, click the upload button. The router should now accept the file and start updating.

And hey presto! You have a non-nargled wireless router with the latest firmware!

Firmware upgrade

Firmware Upgrade Instructions:
Please download and unzip the firmware file to computer's local hard drive and then follow the instructions in the "readme.txt" file to upgrade the firmware.

Warning : -
Firmware upgrade failure may permanently damage the unit and causing it not to function. If the issues in the "Release Note" do not address the problem you are experiencing, please do not upgrade the firmware. Never upgrade the firmware using a wireless connection. Firmware upgrade will reset the Router to factory default state (all current settings will be replaced by default settings). When necessary, please write down the Router's current settings before performing the firmware upgrade. Please do not load the previously saved Router "configuration file" to the new firmware.
