This can be caused by many problems, it's a bit like saying my car won't start but here is a suggestion or two that might help.
your ipod might not have been used for a while, in which case the battery goes flat, big time.
I have repaired a few ipods in my time and what I do is plug a dead ipod into my computer and leave it connected for a while but make sure that the ipod does not get hot, slightly warm is ok.
while your battery is below an acceptable level the computer will not recognize you have connected your ipod.
give it about half an hour but keep an eye on the temperature of the ipod.
if you get a medium wave radio and tune it to a blank station and sit your ipod on top when you connect your ipod to the computer you should hear a continuous hissing, if you hear the hiss going on and off you might have a battery problem and it might need replacing.
if your ipod does start to come alive you will hear all kinds of sounds beeps whistles coming out of your radio just before the screen comes on telling you the battery is low and it is charging.
Check to see if the Hold switch is on. It's located on the top or the bottom of iPod. When it's in the on position, you'll see an orange patch. To turn the hold switch off, slide it until you no longer see the orange patch. Press any button to turn on iPod.
Make sure the battery is charged iPod won't turn on if the battery is empty. Instead, a low battery screen appears for about 3 seconds when you try to turn it on. To charge your iPod, connect your iPod to your computer's built-in 6-pin FireWire or high-powered USB port or connect it to the Apple iPod
Power Adapter and plug the power adapter into an electrical outlet. Note: iPod models without a Click Wheel cannot be charged via
USB. iPod shuffle requires a high-power USB port to charge. iPod nano and iPod (5th generation) can charge via USB or FireWire, but they require USB to sync with iTunes. If you're not sure what iPod model you have, click here.
If you are connecting via USB and the battery is completely discharged, there may be up to a 30-minute delay before iPod powers up. Click here for more information. Reset iPod If iPod still does not turn on or appears to be "frozen" you may need to reset it. When you reset iPod all your songs and files are saved. Some customized settings may be lost. Let the iPod battery drain In rare cases, iPod might get into a state in which it needs to be drained completely before it can be reset. If iPod didn't turn on after you reset it, follow these steps: Disconnect iPod from all power sources and leave it disconnected for about 24 hours. Reconnect iPod to the Apple iPod Power Adapter or computer and reset it. Update iPod's software If iPod turns on after you reset it, use the latest version of iTunes to update iPod. hope this helps
The first thing to try is an ipod reset. Here are the instructions from apple on how to do this: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1320
If the battery is truly dead, they are pretty easy to replace. Same with the hard drive. Batteries go for about $8 including shipping on ebay, and in most cases come with instructions on replacing. One word of caution, when you pry the 2 halves of your ipod apart, there is a small ribbon cable on the top side. Try not to damage that :D
If it wont charge on any of multiple sources then you have a dead battery. Just to make sure, if you are comfortable with opening up your Ipod, check to make sure that the ribbon cable going from the chipset to the battery is securely plugged in on both sides.
go back to your desktop.....upgrade itunes even if you have the new version (it will say itunes is already on desktop do wish to overwrite say yes) once itunes is reinstalled plug ipod to desktop..this should pop up on itunes now....
It sounds like the battery in the iPod may have failed. The internal battery pack in the iPod is designed to last a long time but will eventually fail and require replacement.
I would suggest either taking the unit into your local Apple Store or following the procedure on the iPod support page to get service on the unit.
but a useful suggestion could be backuping your personal files to a folder on your hard disk and before plugging your ipod on the pc just copy paste the files from the folder of your hard disk to the itunes, afterwards plug the ipod on your pc and is ready,
Simplier, make seperate folders on your hard disk. Whatevers you want to be on the ipod put it on your own folder. In this way your files will be safe from making the mistake to synch with your daugther's files. Your files will always be on your hard disk and you will always have the opportunity to put them back on ipod by copy-pasting them to itunes. The itunes programme will be just a way to transfer your folder's file on your ipod.
Example:
"daughter's folder"
If your daughter wants to plug her ipod just erase unwanted (father's files) files from itunes, and copy paste her folder (which stays on the hard disk) on the itunes. Then synch.
"father's folder"
If you want to plug your ipod erase unwanted (daughter's files) files from itunes, and copy paste your folder (which stays on the hard disk) on the itunes. Then sync.
Trust me, this procedure may seem boring and time-wasting but as soon as you understand the philosophy of this procedure you will love it. This way of handlig ipod is good as well for preventing from losing your files by mistake because your files will always be on your hard disk!
Hope i helped! Looking forward to hearing from you for further assistance!
Toggle the Hold switch. To do this, slide the switch to Hold (an
orange bar appears) and then slide it back (orange bar is hidden).
Reset the iPod by holding down the Menu and Center buttons for 10 seconds.
If the Apple logo appears on the display, connect the iPod to
a computer and verify that it appears in iTunes and can play music. If
the iPod appears in iTunes and can play music, no further
troubleshooting is needed.
If the Apple logo does not appear
or the iPod is not seen in iTunes, connect the iPod to a power source
by either plugging it into an Apple iPod USB Power Adapter or directly
into a computer's USB port.
Let the iPod charge for at least 20 minutes.
Note: If the iPod is connected to a computer, make sure the computer is not set to sleep, standby, or hibernate.
After the iPod has charged for at least 20 minutes and while it is
still connected to the power source, toggle the Hold switch again as in
step 1.
Try resetting the iPod by holding down the Menu and Center buttons for 10 seconds.
If the Apple logo appears on the display, connect the iPod to
a computer and verify that it appears in iTunes and can play music. If
the iPod appears in iTunes and can play music, no further
troubleshooting is needed.
If the Apple logo does not appear or the iPod is not seen in iTunes, the iPod should be serviced.
The first step is to change the battery. It's not too hard.
If you know what generation iPod you have, go to Newertech dot com & order a battery. They have video walk throughs on their site as well.
If that doesn't work, It probably means the iPod is dead.
