I had the same problem with my pool filter last year. Found out one of the plates that holds the filter "fingers" was cracked. They also tell me that one of the filter fingers can be torn. Usually it's one of the plates. What make and model do you have ?

Algae dust in pool

I think Brandon's answer deserves a little more time and a slight explanation... as I think it is Spot On!
Algae dust is usually "Already DEAD" algae!
And normally it is way to Small & Fine to be trapped by the filter.
We here on this forum do not know what type of filter you have, But if you do have a "MultiPort" valve as Brandon suggested you turn to the "Waste" mode, you will not use the filter mode to vacuum, as this will only BLOW the Fine Silt like substance right back into your pool, spreading out into the water to be suspended turning your water cloudy if not green, until it settles, and once again you have a covering of Dead Algae Dust on the floor of your pool. But when the filter valve is in Waste mode, you will bypass the filter and the return line altogether and your vacuumed algae silt will be sucked up into the valve, and OUT the valve to waste. And just like that all of the algae dust is vacuumed out and did not Blow back into your pool.
I just had a situation where we cleaned up such a pool where the customer couldn't get the algae out, we came out and vacuumed to waste. And I by chance took a picture of the partially vacuumed pool and Dust remaining.

algae-dust-in-pool-iwrnrkacomuoeuyhvucmvd0t-2-0.jpg If you don't have a multipart valve, then if the pool has no debris but only dust, then and ONLY then, should you use Backwash mode. You NEVER want to vacuum a pool with debris in Backwash mode! NEVER!!! Because the larger debris you are vacuuming will get caught in the internals of your lateral drain assembly or your DE Grids. then it will be very difficult to un clog them, which in turn will reduce proper water filtration efficiency! But the algae dust will be able to pass right on thru. If you have neither of these types of filters because you have a Cartridge style filer, the elements may be able to trap the dust, if it is still to fine to filter, you obtain an additional pool pump, place it pool side, and in the pump out the pump will be two vacuum hoses and away you go.

Good Luck

Dirt passing through the filter

There is no oring from the lateral stand pipe where it plugs into the bottom of the multiport valve.

There is a gasket in the internal valve, commonly called a Spider gasket. Change that.

When vacuuming pool dirty water is being sent back into pool. filter is one year old

Are you sending thw water to waste or ar you filtering it? If you are filtering it through a multi port valve, the spider gasket could be faulty. Proper way to vacuum is through the filter then back wash the filter after cleaning the pool.

I suggest you take the top from your filter and inspect the sand, it should be solid over the top. Have you tracked the pressures over the past year? When was the last back wash? You should back wash only when the pressure goes up 20 PSIG from start (when the filter is clean and free of debris.)

Tell me more please. . . .

How do you backwash to lower water level with the Pinnacle pump?

The model of pump doesn't really matter,You backwash the filter by changing the position of the backwash valve (while the pump is off). If you have a D.E. filter, be sure to add fresh D.E. powder to the filter when you are back in "filter" position.

My filter has to be bumbed every 5 mins or so

The first thing to do is clean the filter.. Open the valve on the bottom of the filter, bump the handle a few times and then turn pump on and run it for a few seconds(15-20) Repeat this until water runs clear. Close valve and then add DE, If that does't solve the problem. filter needs to be disassembled, cleaned and acid washed. If that is the case, write back and we will give detailed instructions on how to do this.

It sounds like your D.E. fingers are clogged with old D.E. and debris. I would do an acid wash. A product called Filter Blaster works great. Also you should never lift your vacuum off of the liner when the filter is on, you should turn it off first and then detach the hose, vacuum and pole.

Buddy is this happening, after the pump turns off or during.. Need more info.. type of filter.. Sometimes the sleeves on the neck area of the panel. Where it mates with the manifold slide down, you will have a small opening. Might be from their.. Could be a hole on one of the panels. Do you have a push/pull valve or a multiport valve (to back wash)
