The above cam was fine until it simply stopped registering a picture in the viewfinder. It plays back previously recorded tapes and continues to record sound. Is there a button I'm not pushing, or is it done for?
Camera powers up, but the viewfinder remains dark with a light gray line at the center and two thin dark gray lines on either side of it (none of the icons display). Does not record, even though the red light glows while the tape advances. Operates normally in VTR mode without any problem. All settings are by the manual with fresh batteries.

I'm not sure what the solution is, but I am having the same probelms, and I would appreciate any help with this since I am shooting a childrens camp and I am fairly isolated and don't have the time to swop cameras or send it to get fixed. I need to know if the recording is fine (video and audio) but the playback is not working correctly...or is it not recording correctly or playing back correctly. The sound cuts out from time to time in playback. Thank you.
My advice is that you should by a cleaning cassette. Put this in the camera and run it for 10 to 20 seconds only. running the cleaning cassette for a long time may damage the head. good luck! Luwangula
Hi Jazzy, Please see the detail below for the said error codes C31:23.
to the symptom and self diagnostic system the problem is in mechanical
section (tape loading section) Therefore camera just need mechanical
adjustment and will work fine again. This problem aries when the
insertion of the cassette is improper or forced insertion. Thanks for using fixya.
Your camera ccd-TRV328 has defect with ccdimagerthat's why not giving picture in camera / recording mode. This part (ccd imager) needs to be replaced and good news Sony will replace it free of cost.
Please click Sony Official Website for details.
I HAD THIS PROBLEM ERROR CODE C31 : 22 WOULD COME UP AND TRV 118 CAM WOULD NOT WORK. I TRIED EVERYTHING TILL ONE DAY I BANGED IT ON A CARPETED FLOOR ON THE BOTTOM OF THE CAMCORDER 5 TIMES QUITE HARD. THEN THE CAM WORKED JUST FINE! MY CAM HADN'T WORKED FOR OVER 7 MONTHS. NOW I HAVE IT BACK. HOPE THIS HELPS SOMEONE.
You can see an image in a camcorder viewfinder any time the camera's actually on in record mode, whether or not the camcorder is actually recording. So that's no guarantee.
Assuming the obvious (you have the right kind of tapes, they're not in write-protect mode, you rewind before playing, etc). I recommend that you borrow a tape of the same kind from someone else and check it on playback in your camcorder. This should lead you know understand if you have a playback problem or a recording problem.
Fixed it, at least temporarily
I had the side off my trv250 examining it, especially the CCD connection. I had read the post about soldering a capacitor to pins 1 and 3 (from the left) on the bottom row. I didn't have the specific capacitor on hand, but I started touching some of the small ones I did have to those pins. I found that after I touched a 100uF, 10V cap to pins 1 and 3 the picture suddenly came back to life and stayed that way after removing the cap. I have no idea how long this will last, and I've set up the cam on a tripod in the livingroom with the LCD display facing me so I can monitor it. If you, like me, figure you have nothing else to lose, you might want to give this a try. Note: my camera was suffering from the green smeary horizontal lines problem, and wasn't completely black. I'm not sure if this makes a difference or not.
