Chain keeps skipping while I'm peddling

This is usually the setting of the rear shift.
Check that the rear d?railleur is properly aligned when it is set to the middle sprocket in the cassette.
The chain must be fed exactly to the middle of the sprocket teeth

Can the timing chain come off or break. If so does that mean the whole car will stop running?

Absolutely. The timing chain is kind of like your spinal cord. It keeps everything running in perfect time. It lines up the the cams, valves, and pistons so that each cylinder is in position to recieve spark and create combustion to keep the engine running. It is very possible for for the chain or belt to break or jump a tooth if not properly maintained. Hopefully this did not occur while your engine was running, as this could result in extensive system damage, such as bent valves. You need to have this checked out by a trusted mechanic. If you don't know one, ask around with your friends and co-workers. If your timing chain did indeed break or skip, this needs to be handled by a pro, as this is a very intricate process.

As I pedal my Trek 800, the pedal slips or skips about one eighth of a turn. It seems like the chain is skipping a link or two ??

Your chain may have a stiff link or links. It is important to keep your chain lubed. TriFlow is highly recommended. Watch you chain as it passes through the jockey wheels on the rear derailleur, you should easily find the stiff links. Use WD40 to break it loose and work it with pliers.

Replaced timing chain now truck has no power

You know, I am having a very similar problem right now. I replaced the timing chain and it was running really bad. I thought it had skipped a tooth on the crankshaft somehow. Turns out it hadn't. and I have no idea at this point what I did.

Review the process. TDC #1 with marked links lining up with cam and crank sprocket marks. Mark distributor rotor at #1.(when you remove the oil pump, the drive cog will twist) so you must put everything together keeping it at TDC and line up distributor with marks. Then time it.

My crank/chain is skipping on my mongoose pro bmx. This just started when I was riding it, and it skipped. The chain is in the right right place and does not seem to be skipping place, but the crank is...

It seems you will need more tension on the chain. Place the bike upside down, loosen the nuts, grab a broom stick or bar and place it between the rear tire and crank housing straight up and down with the handle bars away from you, push the bar away from you. When done properly the tire will come toward you tightening the slack in the chain. While you hold pressure on the bar tighten the nuts and WALLA.
