Question about Hayward Pool & Spa

2 Answers

I just replaced the filter pump on my EC65 DE filter and am having problems with weak water flow coming into the filter. Normally, the pressure inside the filter should be in the range of 10-12 psi, but the current pressure is about half that. The backwash valve is closed and the return line valve is open. The pump runs for about a minute after I connect power and then clicks a couple of times before shutting down due to the pump overheating from a lack of proper water flow for cooling. The plumbing for the pool has been in place for over 30 years and this same filter system has worked fine every year over that time period. Any suggestions regarding where I should look?

When I received the new filter pump, there was no plastic packaging to remove. I just bolted it in using the same four bolts that held the old pump in. Looked for air leaks around the pump basket, but found none. In addition, I've noticed that the pump begins to work OK, but after about 30 seconds the flow rate decreases after which I hear a couple of clicks from inside the pump and about 45 seconds to a minute later, the pump shuts down altogether because it has become overheated.

Hi, it was both the motor and the pump that were replaced. Yes, the motor can be set to run at either 115 or 230 VAC. I did check that setting earlier today and it is 230VAC, which is the correct one. In addition, the overall system was working before the new pump and motor were installed (had been working fine for 28 years up to this point). This is one of the reasons (among others) why I'm so mystified, given that the only thing that changed in the entire system was the pump.

OK, I think you're right and here's why. Even though the pump connects to the exterior outlet via a 230V 20A plug, I believe that the voltage being supplied is just 110. I checked my circuit breaker panel and the shutoff switch for this circuit is set up the same way as all the other 110 circuits and not the 220 circuits. It sounds like I may be able to correct the problem by just flipping the jumper on the pump to 110 instead of 220. Make sense?

Very helpful solution. Saved me a lot of time and heartburn!

Hi, did you replace both motor and pump or just pump? I believe this motor may run on either 115 or 230 VAC. If you replaced the motor as well, do you have it set for the applied voltage?
Also, was the pool open and the system working before the replacement, or is the pool just being opened with the new pump?

OK, there is probably something wrong with the new pump. I have this same system on my pool and have not seen this problem. The only time the pressure is low is when the basket is clogged such that the pump has to pull too hard. I'm assuming you have the drain and skimmer valves open. Does it start at 10 psi and then drop off, or does it start at 5 psi?

Makes sense if there is only one breaker for the circuit. You need 2 breakers side by side to get 220. If you are using 110, the wire should be 12 gauge--and it comes in a yellow jacket.

Was there some plastic film packaging on the filter that you should have removed before installing? Possibly a plug in one end? also, check that nothing fell into the sump area as you were changing the filter. Anything from paper, leaves or a small rodent can cause an issue. Good luck.

How do I remove elbo/check valve on ec65. Seems to be really stuck on.

the main drain should be on suction side of pool system (unless it was converted to be a return for safety reasons) since it is on the suction side of system, it is impossible to have DE entering pool at this point.

Spa indicator says Water SW Open...what does that mean and how do I fix?

This means that the pressure switch is not closing. Generally, this is a lack of water flow issue. The main cause is a dirty filter. Clean cartridges, backwash sand, backwash and recharge DE, whatever is needed to clean the filter, this should fix the problem. If not check other sources of restricted flow: filter baskets, pump baskets, shut-off valves. If everything is clear and there is good flow returning to the pool it could be a bad pressure switch. Replace with the correct switch for your heater.

How to vacuum to waste using a Hayward ec65

Unfortunately, you can't. Unlike other DE filters yours does not have a multiport valve attached. What you can do is plumb in a three way valve between your pump and the filter. One direction would direct water to the filter, the other would direct water to a waste line.

I have a 20,000 gal in ground pool w/ Hayward 36 sq ft de upright filter, Hayward Vari-Flo valve. Actual suction at the skimmer has gotten very weak, (filters and traps clean) It does better in...

You say that you can see a large flow through the pump cover but that water must be coming from the pool somehow. It must be coming through the main drain. If you turn the main drain off then the flow from the skimmer should increase considerably. If it doesn't the issue could be caused by a nearly plugged line between the skimmer basket and the pump. I have had similar symptoms and I started by using a drain jet device on a hose to force water backwards from the pump to the skimmer with the main drain valve turned off. I couldn't clear the plug so I had to dig the line up and found a bad area of the piping where it made a reduced pipe size 90 degree turn. Sycamore bark, leaves and twigs were stuck at that pinch point.

I hope this helps.

When the pressure goes up, try this. Pour some muriatic acid in the skimmer. (about 1/2 bottle) Let pump run for a little bit,(long enough for acid to get into filter)then shut off pump for 5 minutes or so. If pressure goes down to where it should be when it's turned back on, it needs to be disassembled and cleaned and then acid washed.

Appears that the silicone sand is being thrown back into the pool from the return jets? I assume something gave out since the filter is old. What part is needed to replace on the EC65 DE Filter?

Is this a DE filter or a sand filter: Check all internal parts of your DE filter for holes or breaks. There is a hose inside that is suppose to eliminate air locks ... it may be submerged. Same applies to sand ... find the broken lateral or air lock preventing hose.

If you have a DE filter and sand is coming into the pool ... there is definitely a hole returning sand that bathers introduced into the pool ...

You are using DE in your DE filter, right??? not sand ... right???

Earth seaping back into pool thru main drain what could be the problem?

You probally have a leak in the system. When the system is off air is seaping back in through the leak and letting the water in the filter seak the level of the pool, taking the DE with it to come up from the main drain. If you can find and fix this leak you should be able to solve the problem.

Pressure on the EC65 is always high

Certainly sounds like a filter problem. Here's a couple of things to try.#1. i don't know how you cleaned the filters but clean them again with a good filter cleaner/degreaser.#2. After a good cleaning, get a bucket large enough to hold the filter fingers in and give them an acid bath. They recommend a 20 to 1 ratio of water to acid (muriatic) but I personally don' think thats strong enough. Use a good amount of acid and let the fingers soak for a good ten or fifteen minutes. (always add acid to water, not water to acid) Rinse and reassemble filter. If that does'nt solve problem, I think it's time to replace filter.

My hayward de filter will not filter over 1 hour

How much DE are you putting in it??? If it is a EC40 then no more than 4 small coffee cans of DE.
If it is an EC65, then no more than 6 - small coffee cans of DE. ( you can even shy back by a 1/2 of can of DE, without any problems.
Is the pool green??? If so, the filter will continue to plug up until clean.
Keep your Chlorine abit on the high side...DE filters run best with a chl reading of 3.0
