Check to see if the lock slider is in the locked position. If it is unlocked then something is preventing the scanner to move. Some machines have a plastic strip that can come unstuck on the inside of the glass for the adf. The contact image sensor hits the plastic and prevents its moving to its home position, hence the error message. You need to remove the rear, left and right covers. Next the top covers. the operation panel is next and lots of screws. Finally the glass and its frame come off. you should be able to see what the problem is now and correct it.
