When unplugged for an hour the will run for a couple of hours and then stop. There is a puddle of water on the floor. This also happened when the unit was new and the technician could find nothing wrong

When the freezer is not running, there is a puddle of water on the floor. I unplug the power to the freezer for about an hour and it starts running fine for about a day and then requires another shut down. after Sundays shutdown the startup has been running fine for 2 days. The freezer was purchased in September of 2006. If this is a sealed refrigeration problem, the 5 year warranty will e running out soon. This shutdown occured the during the first year we had the freezer. After it was running, the technition found nothing wrong with the system.

I'm assuming that if we call for a technition now, we would get the same result.

Where does the defrost drain instead of out the bottom part of the door?

  • cohodasal Jun 16, 2011

Just like 5 years ago when the freezer was new, it fixed itself and is running fine now without me doing any of your suggestions. Thanks for your involvement, I'll pay the $12 but do not need the ongoing charges.

Hello, Welcome to FixYa.

Based on your post I understand you have a problem with a Kenmore freezer, however if you could provide the complete model number (usually located on the inside cabinet wall) and possibly the age of the unit I would be better equipped to assist you without generalizing on what it may or may not be.

I know many of the Kenmore freezers had control or start device failures causing the entire unit to not cycle....but, let me know and we can go forward from here.
I'll watch and look forward for your reply. Thank you for visiting FixYa for your inquiry.

Regards,

Macmarkus :)

    Hello,

Thank you for replying and providing the details included, however I still require a model number to address your specific unit.

I hope you can appreciate there are too many variables to generalize.

    Hi,

Thank you for providing the model number, this lets me know your freezer is built by Frigidaire and what is or is not common issues with these.

I'll start by saying it doesn't sound like a sealed system problem. The one area I'd inspect is the control inside the freezer mounted on the back wall/evaporator cover.

These have a habit of becoming loose in the box which holds it in place via a few plastic clasps. Whether models with the control on the door or in the cabinet as yours.

Pull it out and then firmly push it back in to insure it is fitted securely. Ultimately it could be the control itself (shown here) but the start device is a possibility as well, but I'd focus on the control first based on your description and symptoms.

Let me know what you find and I'll try to help you move forward in any manner I can. Good luck.

    Regards,

    Macmarkus :)

Hello, the drain is located directly below the evaporator and is guided to a bucket above the compressor at the back where it then evaporates. If its coming out the front that indicates the drain is clogged or obstructed (I find removing the plastic screen there helps it drain better ) but that shouldn't play any part in it shutting down.

    Regards,

    Macmarkus :)

    Hello again,

I've read your post "Just like 5 years ago when the freezer was new, it fixed itself and is running fine now without me doing any of your suggestions" and thank you for replying.

The bottom line is the unit is working, so thank you for choosing FixYa in any event and I appreciate your patience and willingness to work with me.

Keep an eye on your freezer and if needed let me know if I can assist you in any manner in the future and I'll certainly do what I can.

Please take a second to write a brief testimony and rate the info I provided here, it is appreciated.

    Regards,

    Macmarkus :)

So the compressor is not running? Have you checked the defrost timer or adaptive control on your unit? this is the piece that turns on and off the defrost function if the unit were stuck in the defrost mode the compressor would not turn on also if you had a bad start relay or overload on the compressor this would also constitute the compressor also not turning on as well if you have any further questions message me back I await your reply Thanks Rick

please provide the model number and I can provide a detailed schematic of the defrost timer or the adaptive control in your unit without knowing the model number some are in the ceiling of the frige area some are under the front toe kick as to the adaptive control that is usually located around the rear behind a panel but with your model number i can actually see what you have I await your reply thanks Rick

in your unit shown in this diagram you actually dont have a defrost timer you have an adaptive control which works like a defrost timer and controls the defrost heater so in other words you would be checking the adapative control you also have a defrost thermostat which if you had an ice up issue you would check this piece but as to the problem with the compressor not running you would first check the start relay and if the start relay proved to be not at fault then you would look at the control itself check this link it is the schematic for your entire machine most of the deforst pieces are found in the system section and the control is found in the cabinet sectionhttp://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdir... I await your reply if you have any further questions Thanks Rick

defrost drains under the evaporator coil and goes down to the compressor drain pan located in the rear of your machine you have to remove the rear panel inside the freezer in order to access the drain Thanks Rick

If the control is "ON" and the compressor is not running, you will need a start relay... Make sure you didn't accidentally turn it off by pushing food against the control knob!

My freezer is heating up?

Because a freezer only does one thing and that is freeze things, unfortunatly any things that breaks on a freezer causes the same thing. Is it running, does the fan work (frost free) are the shelves melting (non frost free) can you hear the compressor running , is the condensor fan running ?

Won't freeze

Is the compressor running the whole time? If so may have a problem with a refridgerant leak....check the compressor in the rear of unit, feel if its hot....may be as simple as a relay.

Check these two things first.  1.  Is there a thick frost buildup on the back panel at the bottom half of the freezer?  2.  Do you hear the fan running inside the freezer?  Let me know what you find.
