    Hello,

the problem is that I cannot follow even 1st step, because I cannot turn off my nuvi: it doesn't respond at all on pressing power button. The screen is frozen and says: "GARMINtm" with blue up-arrow above "N" and "Pre-Boot Mode" on the bottom of the screen.

    What else I can try?

    Thank you!

    Hello,

I cannot follow even 1st step because my nuvi doesn't respond to pressing power button.

Windows do not recognize my nuvi, so I downloaded and reinstalled USB driver fromhttp://www8.garmin.com/support/download_...

I tried also to reinstall a firmware; the WebUpdater found the device "nuvi 650 (Unit ID 3407830423)". But at the end of installation dialog it says: "The update file is corrupted".

    Windows doesn't see the device.

    So Nuvi looks comletely dead...

    Can I do anything else?

    Thank you!

I contacted Garmin, and they said nothing could be done with my nuvi online. They suggested me either send it to them for repair or yet better buy a new nuvi 1350 (analog of my 650).

    Thank you!

Here is the procedure how I find it:
1. Power OFF your Nuvi.
2. Press and keep holding the most right upper corner of the LCD screen
3. Power ON your Nuvi but DON NOT release your finger either from Power button nor from LCD screen (keep both pressed until the procedure ends)
4. You will notice Nuvi boots in Pre-Boot mode. Now quickly connect your USB cable. Prior to that make sure you have the latest Garmin USB drivers installed on your PC (it comes with MapSource software)
5. If you managed to connect your USB to your Nuvi when it is still in pre-boot mode, you will see that Windows recognizes a new device - "Garmin GPS unit" and starts searching for drivers. Nuvi after a while turns the pre-boot mode off, but nevermind, finish installing the windows drivers. If your are using XP just click "Automatically install driver software" and when it says "Your Hardware is ready for use" you can unplug your Nuvi.
6. Drag the "nuvi_sys.rgn" file over "Updater" and select USB.
7. Now repeat steps 1-4.
9. Updater will recognize the unit then you can press Update button
10. Once the "Loader" text appears on your Nuvi, you can release your fingers from LCD right upper corner and from Power button.
11. Wait until update finishes, then disconnect your Nuvi.

If this isnt work, I can offer two suggestions:
1.- If Windows doesn't recognize your Nuvi, then reinstall the usb drivers that can be downloaded from Garmin's website.
2.- If you can get the computer to recognize the Nuvi, run Webupdater and reinstall the firmware even if you already have the latest version.

The Garmin website has USB drivers (for all Garmin GPS units) here: garmin.com/support/download

Hope helps.

If the upgrade file is corrupted, and you download this from Garmin site, I suggest ask and concact with the Garmin Support for some solution tip (generally is free); some users recommended not use WebUpdater for upgrade.

Keep in mind this quote post:
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I contacted the local Garmin support rep and I was given the following sequence to recover from this condition:

    1. Power off the unit.

    2. HOLD down the power button and you will see "Pre Boot Mode" appear on
the lower part of the display. KEEP HOLDING the power button down and
the display will flicker, do this until the pre boot mode message
disappears. This seems to take a long time (60 seconds at least).

    3. Once the pre boot mode message disappears release the power button
and your device will perform some activites to recover from the above
    problem.

Apparently this sequence will only work with the above error. I hope this assists other if they encounter this problem.

I still don't know why the firmware upgrade process failed BUT after
performing the above sequence I found that the firmware upgrade had
    actually worked (strange).

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Keep us updated.

Are you running this unit while it is charging? Does the Nuvi 660 have a sufficient charge?

Try to do a hard reset on the unit.
